View Full Version : can crusher mod to crush 24 oz cans

My local adult beverage store carries LaBatts Ice in 24 oz cans ( $12.25 for a case of twelve plus it tastes good) and they don't fit in my 16 oz can crusher.
The very easy fix is to purchase an additional 16 oz can crusher, drill out the rivets, turn the top crusher around and slot the existing straps about an 1/8" on each end.
Now the big cans fit and can be crushed easily. A regular 12 oz can is on the left. The cardboard keeps one from abrading their knuckles on the concrete block wall.

Nice mod. No "bottle bill" (5 cent deposit) where you are? Those seem to prefer the cans be left intact.

No deposit on cans or bottles in PA.
Fun fact-- if someone transport containers that have a deposit value on them into a state that has a deposit from a state that does not and you attempt to "cash them in", it's considered theft.
Happened to a coworker many years ago. Took many bags of cans ( smashed flat) from PA to MA to cash them in for the deposit.
They refused as they were flattened and he was driving a Blazer with PA plates. They told him to go home with his smashed cans before they had him arrested for theft
Fun fact: Canadians use their foreheads to crush beer cans. Right, FLEXjs? :bigears:

I was a kid when they first started making aluminum cans. Collected them that Summer (stomped them flat) and hauled 100 pounds worth to the scrap yard. I got $7... Definitely not worth the time. Could have made more than that mowing a lawn

CA stores stopped providing refunds directly. You get charged extra for recycling services to throw them away. Just another BS government scam.

:iagree: We still pay CRV at the time of sale but almost all recyclers of cans stopped doing it because the money wasn't there to support the effort (labor and whatnot) but Cali still takes the money for CRV. Now the waste company gives you a "recycle" bin to put them in and I'm sure they recycle them for the cash. Friggin racket! Seriously thinking about turning an old fridge into a kegorator. :datawiz:

I've never collected a deposit refund. Only paid it a few times. Easy to avoid buying anything that requires it. To hell with them and their 10 cents.

:yesnod: Pisses me off.
I remember the days when pop 1) came in bottles, and 2) you could take the empty bottles back to the grocery store, get your bottle deposit refunded in full, and they would actually wash out the bottles and re-use them. An actual win for the environment - whoda thunk it?

That's only if homeless people don't pick them out of your recycle bin first.

I remember when they put one of these in San Diego. Parents would take us down and we could choose our own case. I was very fond of the anti-freeze colored and the cherry cola:seasix:

fine, use the 8x8 tamper (it's kept in the garage next to the ladders). works on dirt and gravel too.

I crush my beer cans, and store them in a trash bag in the garage. A friend of mine owns the local bike shop, he crushes his cans and puts aside any AL bike parts too. A couple of our friends bring AL by when they have it, or take the time to crush a bunch of cans. Every 2-3 months, I collect it all up and take it to the scrap dealer, currently $0.53 per pound. We get $200-$300 per year from it, and donate the money to the robotics club my son and I used to belong to. It's probably not really worth my time, but I like that I know it is really getting recycled, and didn't end up in a landfill somewhere.
