I've been dealing with this crap for years now.

Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

Happens when I try to play nearly ANY video.

Have you tried rebooting? :leaving:

Need more info...

Are you downloading a video and then trying to play it? WMP should only be playing internal stuff.

The first thing I would try is setting the default somewhere else than WMP and see what happens.

Have you cycled power? Perhaps the question I hated most from India. No, I freakin' waited on the phone for an hour for you to suggest that. Well, can you try it again?:slap:

Thing I hated the most was "do the needful thing".

They'd call me for help and say this. Began asking them what the needful thing was. All I got in return was silence and the distinct impression they were mad or frustrated. Explained to them that I'm not a mind reader and there are many things I am capable of doing, they need to be specific. I knew their problem, was trying to help them do some self-improvement (or perhaps I was bored and looking for entertainment?). In any case I discovered they aren't interested in that and they'd hang up or repeat themselves. Eventually I'd do the needful thing to prevent them from calling back or filing a complaint... Oh well, can't say I didn't try

U-tube can fix damn near anything. Try this -

Sorry about the music but it was either that or needing a foreign interpreter :D
(Adjust quality settings to 720p by clicking that gear wheel in lower right corner of the video if you want to see clearly)

type the exact error code into google and you might get a video like the one above. Seriously, WMP sucks the wanky. Get VLC and make that your default player.

If you can't even play videos off the internet then I'd try the above directions on the video player file itself. Apparently your computer doesn't recognize you as having permission to operate it?

Never heard of VLC. Did a little research. This makes it sound like a can of worms to me ->

Is VLC a virus?

The VLC Addon virus is similar to other adware that installs on Internet browsers using fake downloads including, for example, Feven, Mystart toolbar, and SuperWeb. To avoid installation of these rogue browser plug-ins, download free software (such as VLC media player, Java, and browser updates) from developers' websites only.

We install VLC as part of our base images here at work. Nothing wrong with it and it will play every codec out there.

I don't doubt that. Just because it "sounds like one" doesn't mean it is one... But I've no problem with the default viewer so not worth the hassle to me :)

That default viewer is more of a hassle.

Totally true story: In 1999, I was selected as one of the first users of a new system to let us connect to the company network remotely using the internet. I got a laptop, and a set of directions, went home and tried to log on. I could not get on the internet, so I look at the instructions, and they said "If you cannot get onto the internet, go to this website for help www.something".

In the morning, I went to the IT department, showed them that, and said "This is a joke, right?" They were not pleased.

The reason is they are not experts. They follow a flow chart. If that flow chart gets interrupted then all they know is to keep following the flow chart over and over again.
