Man lives off only beer for Lent

CORNING, IA - An Iowa man is nearing the end of his pledge to live through Lent on beer alone, just as Franciscan monks did centuries ago.

During a season of sacrifice, J. Wilson has had people wondering.

"I want to educate beer people about God, and I want to educate God people about beer," Wilson said.

He pledged on Ash Wednesday to live Lent on only beer and water.

"Forty-six days is a long time. I've lost 22 and a half pounds, I think, as of today," Wilson said. "My energy is high. I can do anything. I can go out and chop wood right now."

But living on liquids alone has had its downfalls.

"I'm tired because I go to the bathroom four times at night: 12 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 6 o'clock, so I don't get a whole lot of rest," Wilson said.

Wilson, a local newspaper editor who sipped while at work, has been tempted.

"There were a couple of days where I felt, you know, grrr, hunger pain. You know, 2 o'clock in the afternoon, grrr, 'I could go for some lunch right now.' Four o'clock, there it is again," Wilson said. "It's not a drunk fest. My body couldn't sustain a drunk fest for that period of time."

Instead, Wilson says it has been spiritual.

"I've learned that one, these monks could certainly do what we've heard they did," Wilson said. "Two, I think our human body is more resilient than we give it credit for being."

I wonder how many beer he had a day? And you gotta admit, beer is filling.:beer::beer:
I guess it gave his IT, colon, and sphincter a rest, which is supposed to be beneficial for the rejuvenation thereof! :clever::clever::clever:

Still, beer's full of a lot of empty calories, too. Non-alcoholic beer actually has the same calories as beer with alcohol: 148 calories in 12 ounces.

Drinking light beer, though, you'll only take in 99 calories per 12 ounces. One six-pack has more than 500 calories!

Drinking that much couldn't have been good for his liver or kidneys, either. :sadangel:

There's really no such animal as an "empty" calorie, J. Fuel is fuel is fuel. Carbs at 4 calories per gram, Alcohol at 7 calories per gram, it all metabolizes and does the Krebs Cycle shuffle.

I'd wager he had to supplement with a daily multivitamin, though... all he was consuming, was fuel. Not enough vitamins and minerals in beer to keep from getting Scurvy or BeriBeri or some other nutritional disorder, sticking to beer alone for 40 days...
