I always put the metal towards the head but coat both sides with some Mr. Gasket spray on copper gasket sealer first.

WELL, I finally got all the silly rubber hoses, stat housings and everything plumbed up filled the radiator, tightened some hoses of course, and so the water level is staying the same, right up to the top of the rad....SO, in a while, I will use a lever relieving rad cap on it, hook a hose to the overflow tube and take the other end of hose to hold it to the air jet get a bit of pressure into the engine cooling system without going ape shit stupid....rad cap should release on the top gasket by THEN, if something stoopid happens.....wish I pulled BOTH heads and gotten them redun....and saved a ton of bux....oh well, short block was a bit tired anyway.....so it's got a shot of adrenaline now so on for another 20? years by my son in Ca. in a short enough while.....:confused5:

If thermostat is in, the water level is only radiator. Need the car to run up to temp, thermostat open then add more, check levels and leaks in oil etc…

Since I live in FLORIDUH and it's near 90f today, I have trimmed the outer edge on one side of the stat, a 180f stat, so the water can equalize the level, the rad filler cap is the high point of the water system.....have a pan under the engine with oil sump open just to make DAMN SURE no more EFFFFFFing ups.....:issues:

yep

Yep, turn the heater on so the water will flow into the heater core. I just always leave the rad. cap off to let air escape. I use a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water. Buy the pure coolant and not the mix. Don't pay them over priced for water mixed coolant.

Best of luck. We know it's been a PITA.

Why did you trim the T-stat? That will cause over heating just like not having one in at all. It doesn't let the coolant stay in the radiator long enough to cool to proper temp.

Many years ago I noticed a 195 stat had a much smaller center flow diameter than say a 180 or much less a 160 stat.....and fighting temp issues from time to time, I keep buying 180 stats and increasing the flow rate to keep temps down gotta aluminum rad with dual spal fans so even in traffic it's gotta stay cool......over the years the stat makers have reduced the flow rate/diameter to one standard...just because the stat opens at ~195 or even 180, the flow rate being restricted, allows the engine to heat up but good in traffic in 100f outside temps...much less the air temp coming off the road down lo.....especially off black assfault......
