OK from a previous thread, I filled the entire oil sump with water, when I thought it was ready to go last week......and so BOTH heads off to the head shop for some psychy exam.......
short block on stand now....pan off bottom......water pump sealed on short block front.....so going to take lower hose, and hold up high, and fill with water, and see if any dripping/FLOW from lower OIL areas of engine....full up to top of water passages......how legit a test you all think this is???
figger leave it overnight to check pan in the AM.....

WELL, the trick IS.....to ID the damn point of failure allowing the OIL SUMP to be filled with WATER/antifreeze when I thought the job was over with.....
so going to fill the water jacket up to head deck height and see if any drainage overnight.......damn expensive these daze to find another short block.....even used, and then the WTF?

Do they offer magnafluxing at the shop you are using? Or is there any type colored dye you can add to the water to make it easier to see if it is leaking? Even food coloring vs just plain water or something that shows up under a black light.
Remember, once in the car the entire system will be pressurized vs just trying to fill it with water and looking for a leak.

Exactly. That's what Brawndo is for. It's got what engines need!

This is the shop where my dad works and they do offer magna flux. The expensive part is paying to put the parts in the boiler to clean all the grime and crap off of them.

Do you know Oscar at OP cyl head?? turns out some 20 years ago I got those heads worked over by his Father's place...Dover cyl head??
at any rate I going to your Dad's place this AM to pick up the heads, two of them this time round......and hopefully this weekend some flooring tile will be moved from the garage, so I can move shit around to make room to get the short block outta the garage and into a pickup and take it to your Dad's place.....I"m still going to try my own setup here, but I need to tape off some water jacket holes on lower edge of block where cyl heads go.....forcing water higher in the water jacket, and see if any dripping out the open bottom end....if it does, then I know the block is trash, and I be in market for a new short block.....lovely.....need to be a roller block too boot...so L98 at oldest...LT be better......:confused5::dance:

the T-bucket I had.... the block was made into a roller. Not hard to do or expensive, either.

Wonder how, the engine I have has keepers around the lifters...look like figger 8's keeping adjacent roller lifters from turning in the block.....and of course the metal keeper holding the figger 8 fitting pieces in place....but that keeper has some bolts into what looks like would be a different block casting than other non roller cam engines......I poured water into it full up this AM, and it leaked a bit outta where I taped off the lower water holes.....BUT, I going to take a chance that in fact the block is right, and somehow going to get it over to your Dad's shop there, and let them check it out more better.....
too mutch other non related crap going on, that interfears with this, though....so maybe before I kick off.....

THAT is obvious......BUT I have some difficulty getting the block to the shop for his inspection....which I think after my test this AM, is worth the effort...the block did not leak into the oil sump when filling the water jack pretty full
blocking the lower passages at head deck height....so to get it over there for a final judgement.....say it was leaking bad....just scrap it.....WHY ME??

It's obvious that you love this car, and that's cool...
If it was me, I would ditch this headache of an engine and just buy a simple crate motor with a carb and call it a day. :island14:

Nah, I got an LT1 injection from early 90's with the HEI up top in back, and so no plastic over the LT injection...makes for good stares from folks....
SO FINALLY got rid of some flooring material outta the garage, so I can move other crap outta the way, and get this engine over to your Dad's place there Critterus.....

When I had my '73 I had a 350 roller block built with Vortec heads and an AEM Holley Double Pumper with HEI. Engine dyno a shade under 450 Horsepower. Car really could scoot. :seasix:

Called your Dad at the shop this AM, so Wed. PM/afternoon I calling him and going over the see that engine.....and putting off any more activity on my old engine.....He gave me a good price on it 900 bux.....hell of a lot simpler than me busting my old ass trying to get the junk I have back together....

You should consider ditching the water injection setup.....car will probably run, or run better, plus you won't be as concerned about rusting out the inside of your engine.

I just feel so STOOOPID for using tap water in the engine, adding just enough anti freeze to get through a FLORIDUH winter......and not knowing the combo of metals makes internal corrosion SO bad that the block gets destroyed.....
????? another friend told me about that, need used distilled WATER.....lovely......

Distilled water is cheaper than tap water, just not as convenient.
