I grew up with a pool...by the time I was a teenager I had had enough of that pita.

Lived in Florida over 20 years...had one home w/ pool...but did not live there long.

actually, a pool is worse than a boat. at least a boat can be sold off fairly easy. A pool is an expense to get rid of.

I like the falls, and the spouts of water out the sides. :yesnod: Only spend the money on the spa if you feel you'll use it. The heater and other spa equipment add a good amount of $ to the cost.

I am getting bids now (well, starting too). I plan on asking if there is a way I can light a fart underwater to help heat it. There is no way I could possibly drink enough beer to pee in the hot tub enough to warm it up. :leaving:

There are a lot of critters in our "lake" aka the pacific ocean. :D

I haven't seen any sharks, and doubt I will see any gators.

A pool would be nice because the way the beach is here, when it is low tide you have to go way out into the seaweed area for it to be deep enough to swim in. The upside is no maintenance.

Lots of sea urchins in that area past the sandy beach that hurt like hell if you ever step on one.

It's not ready for prime time.
Much more expensive than throwing a little chlorine and acid in once a week.

I'm no pool expert; this is my first one, but my salt system has be essentially trouble free for 10 years. I've replaced the catalyst once during that time and tossed in an occasional bag of salt which is really cheap. It does require cleaning the catalyst 2 or 3 times a year, but that's an easy task.

I can't vouch for how much extra energy may have been used by the catalyst, but I'm pretty sure it's been much cheaper than buying chlorine. Over the past 10 years, I've paid more for the occasional bag of shock that I have for salt.

Even if salt cost twice as much to operate, I'd do it again just to avoid the chlorine smell.

A lot of my neighbors have put in pools and invite us over to swim which is great. They seem to be more for the kids than the adults. Growing up we had a 20 x 40 pool with diving board and I lived in it during the summer. As I got older I didn't use it nearly as much except for some great parties in H.S. with a lot of girls in wet t-shirts. Here's a couple of galleries from pool builders that do a lot in my neighborhood...

Is your pool heated?

No chlorine smell if done correctly. You are lucky on the catalyst. Many fail after 3 years and at $1500 a pop, they aren't cheap.

I have a heater for the spa that could heat the pool. I've never done so (intentionally :) ). Here in TX, the season is pretty long already... a 'cooler' for the water in the summer would be a good thing. I should mention that no one closes their pools in the winter here... mine runs all year long.

I have a Goldline catalyst... $430 online. Good for 40k gallons and I have half that.

I'll take your word that a chlorine pool can be maintained such that there is no smell, but I've never been in one. Again... I'm no expert, but nearly everyone I know with a pool in this area uses salt.

TB, I'm no expert, either.
I just learned some hard lessons.

We've had the pool for about eight years. Converted it to salt about 3 years ago, that cost about $1500. I never had an issue with smell or balance, I just thought the salt may be better.

Unfortunately, the salt water ruined my heater (about $4K to replace) and the catalyst failed. AFAIK, not many heaters tolerate saltwater and no warranty is more than a year.

Like many others, I converted back to chlorine.

Interesting (not in a good way; 4k, ouch) on the heater. I use my heater very little since the first year or two but so far no issues with it. I do have some greater than normal erosion of the flagstone edging and my friend/pool guy thinks it may be salt related. I attribute it more to soft flagstone, but not sure.

Your advise to OP to research is sound. Lots to know about these beasts.

OP: If possible, add a sprinkler zone to keep the water level up on the pool. Nice when you are on summer vacations. Low water = bad.

I don't know how yours is plumbed, but on ours the water allays circulated through the heater. I can't believe how fast it rusted out after we did the salt deal.

And I agree, about the auto-water filler. Plumb it in from the start and it's cheap.

Omega Man, I was going to mention that Chef's pool has a sloped beach entry which is really cool instead of just having steps.

Another friend (back40) has a tanning ledge. Also very cool. :yesnod:

Another friend (Snowman) has a picnic table built in the water, and you can put an umbrella in it, too. :)

Some ideas here...http://www.sunsetpools-spas.com/pools/options/custom-features

It is, IF it's done right. The whole "beach entry" thing was my ex-wife's big idea (mainly because she had a friend who had one in her pool and of course we HAD to do what they did  )

Problem is, a beach entry needs a long gradual slope. This one is shorter and steeper, making in more unsafe IMHO.

Yipes! More input for you, there, Omega Man! If had were picking one of the two (walk out or tanning ledge), I'd definitely go with the tanning ledge...those are really cool. :yesnod:

Man, those are some nice swimmin' holes! The house we recently moved into has a 7 person Beachcomber hot tub which is really nice. I'm learning the whole bromide system, and it's pretty easy. I won't take any pictures right now as the yard doesn't look that great so I'll save myself the embarassment :D
