‘Woke up sweating’: Texas power companies remotely raise temperatures on people using their smart thermostats

https://www.dailydot.com/debug/texas-remote-controlled-smart-thermostats/

Power companies in Texas are remotely raising temperatures inside of some customers’ homes amid the state’s ongoing energy shortage.

Houston resident Brandon English, whose home has an internet-connected smart thermostat installed, was shocked to learn of the practice after his wife and infant daughter “woke up sweating.”

Speaking with KHOU 11, English stated that despite his wife turning down the temperature before taking a nap with their 3-year-old child, the temperature in their home rose significantly.

“They’d been asleep long enough that the house had already gotten to 78 degrees,” English said. “So they woke up sweating.”

English, who expressed concerns over the potential for his young child to overheat and dehydrate, said it wasn’t long after that his wife received a text alert noting that the thermostat had been remotely altered during a three-hour “energy saving event.”

The thermostat, operated by the company EnergyHub, appears to have been enrolled in a program known as “Smart Savers Texas,” KHOU 11 notes. The program, which many customers are enrolled in unknowingly, allows power companies to remotely adjust thermostats when energy demands are high.

Upon learning about the program, English says he immediately unenrolled: “I wouldn’t want anybody else controlling my things for me.”

The English family is not the only one in Texas that seems to be experiencing such issues. The Daily Dot came across multiple videos on social media from individuals who claimed that their thermostats were being altered remotely.

In those cases, residents with Google’s Nest thermostats received messages noting that their temperatures had been adjusted during an “Energy Rush Hour.”

The issue comes shortly after the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the state’s power grid manager, called on customers to reduce their energy usage and adjust their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher

We have that program here, but you have to expressly opt in to the program before they can muck with your thermostat. "Shocked to learn" probably means "completely ****ing forgot I signed up for this."

Dude, you live in Houston. If your child is going to overheat and dehydrate when it's 78 degrees and no humidity inside your home.......your child is very sick and you should seek medical treatment.

~agreed to lower electric use during periods of peak demand

~butthurt when he is expected to live up to that agreement

I'm embarrassed that this guy lives in Houston. Dude, just move your ***** family somewhere else, m'kay?

People overheat during the day while running around working and being in the Sun. Body temp drops while sleeping, if you don't get that break from being exposed to constant heat you're more prone to heat stroke. Losing one or two nights of cooling down that way in the Summer isn't going to kill you but it's a cumulative effect and a week of that can.

I don't use air conditioning, never have. Can handle 90's and 100's without a problem but when night comes you'll find me sleeping under a sheet in front of a fan. Couldn't handle more than a few days of such heat otherwise.

When using AC, our thermostat is set for 78 degrees. I sleep very comfortably. That guy is either a total whiner, or needs to move to a cooler climate. I'm thinking the former is more likely.

70 for AC at night here,if people staying over with doors shut, sometimes 69....during day if AC is on it's usually 74 or 75.....(stat is in upstairs hallway) so it's always cooler downstairs set that way.
If they ever controlled my Nest I would put an old school stat back on the wall.

I have an "old school" stat on the wall, as in, it is electronic and programmable, but no internet connection. The power company has often offered me a "free" brand new thermostat (as if I don't know where the money to buy these new fancy stats comes from), but they are up front that the reason why they want to install it is so they can remotely raise my set point on hot summer days when the load is the highest.

I live in FL and noticed that my AC was turned up to 85 two days ago when I usually keep it at 78. Also noticed the apartment managers card on my kitchen counter. Yeah, I ****ing lost it on them that day. I'm wondering how I can break my lease with no penalties as some shady shit has happened twice before.

Can't.... apartment complex. I did pick up the managers desk phone and called the corporate office with her sitting there. Man, she was pissed. That's the 2nd time I had to do that so I installed wireless cameras in the place yesterday.

First time something happened, I called for pest control to come out and specifically stated in writing they are not to enter without me. Guess what....I find the notice on my kitchencounter that they were there, check through my stuff, and sure as a shit....a 500rd box of 5.56 is missing. I made the manager help me track them down and the contractors dumbass employee had the box. So, I called the cops and they hauled his ass off.
