I have a dish with the 3 lnb's. there are connections for 1, 2, 3, and "LNB in"....what is the "LNB in" connection for?

I forget, maybe an external antenna?

That's where you plug the LNB.

LNB picks up OTA signals.

The LNB is a low noise block.
It's the little plastic piece on the end of your dish (not the parabolic part)
Mulitple LNB's are used for multiple receivers. most homes don't need more than a dual one. (unless you have more than two receivers in your house)
When I was on the ship, we had to connect our LNB in and outs through a splitter to get signal to the 8 receivers.
this is what most homes use: a dual LNB

here's a quad:

Certain LNB's only work with certain satellites, too.
as far as Dish Network, it'll be D101 and D119. Also, if using Dish Network, you may also need to inject a 22khz tone into the LNB to "turn it on"
LNB In can be used to daisy chain additional LNB's

Correct. On the these, the "in" connection is for something like a terestrial antenna for local stations broadcasting over the air in the UHF/VHF FREQ ranges (mostly network). I looked at the remnants of my old DirecTV dishes and the regular dish is plugged into the "in" port on the HD dish. It keeps the company from having to add in a splitter that may fail or add more noise to the line and from having to run a secondary line all together.
As far as the different LNBs for different satellites, the reason is that each system operates on it's own given bandwidth and frequency range.
on the bottom picture, the f connectors are labeled 1, 2, 3 and lnb in. looks like what i have, but i have 3 of the circular thingymabobs, that i thought were called lnb's.
so i just need to hook up to the one labeled one, hook it to my receiver, and i'm done?

You have the HD dish from DirecTV it sounds like. All three of those LNBs need to be hooked up if that's the case.
