and I'm not talking about gas, either.
I called a local slaughter house to see about getting some turkeys and a cow processed.
Normally, we'd do it ourselves, but we have 40 turkeys, and they are a general pain to pluck. I'm kinda vaginal about it... I'll kill em, but I can't handle gutting or plucking (it's yucky... I don't like touching raw chicken, either.)
And we don't have the facilities to process a cow.
So the local shop wants $15 a turkey just to process. That's not a live delievery, either. so I'd still have to kill it, and pay them $15 to pluck it and clean it. In Indiana, we pay $4 a bird, and we bring them in live.
The cow is a Dexter, so only weighs around 500 lbs. $300 to process (again, bring it in dead and dressed) and $0.79 a pound dead weight.
When we had our last cow done, it was $0.60/lb + $50 to kill it.
f'n ridiculous.

First time I went hunting with my FIL to be, we bagged a few pheasants. He had me dispatch the one wounded one (no biggie) When we got to the car, he told me to field dress them (I guess he wanted to see if "City Boy" was gonna faint or sump'n). I did, and then on the drive home I told him that I aced comparative anatomy as a premed. He laughed and, when we went deer hunting, asked me to field dress our buck. As I started to cut, he asked what we had in the "CAT" lab that was that size...

Zactly! Your choice. Pay to have someone else do it at the price they charge or do it yourself.

Why not call around to a more rural area? Does Back40 know of anybody?
Might be cheaper to buy the beef and turkey at the grocery store.

but it's not. And I know where this meat is coming from, and what it's been fed and (not) injected with
just that place is outrageous
I was told if you call them and speak Spanish, it's almost half the price
Another shop by us is $45 kill fee and .70/lb
but they won't do the turkeys.
Think I'll just build a Whizbang plucker.
