View Full Version : The Social Media Attack Vector - Virtue Signaling and Shaming, by Chinaski (Scott)

Cliff Notes: I'm smart and have critical thinking skills.
I am writing this as I was recently attacked on Social Media for expressing an opinion. Now, for most of you that wouldn't be a big deal, but for me it's a bit different as I am (somewhat) in the public spotlight, and have a reputation and standard to uphold. It's concerning as I could potentially be ostracized personally and professionally over an opinion.
Regardless, I made a comment regarding actress Patricia Arquette apologizing for her "White Privilege" and that she was ashamed to be born white.
This really rubbed me the wrong way. First of all, nobody gets to choose their parents. Nobody asks to be born. Apologizing for something that is out of your control is meaningless. Secondly, she is more privileged than most of us. She's made a fortune as an actress, and while I don't doubt that she had sacrifices and failures along the way, she should feel blessed to have "made it" as an actress in Hollywood. Many come to Hollywood with dreams of hitting it big and they don't...regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation.
Lastly, in the abstract, she really doesn't give a shit about black people. She simply took an opportunity for shameless self promotion by using a cause and making it about HERSELF. It's disingenuous and insincere.
Regardless, I didn't delete my post as I don't feel that I am wrong. But it sickens me that society has basically turned into mob rule, and folks are shouted down for having an opinion contrary to the narrative.
/RantOff
i have a cousin, Jessika Williams (she's on IMDB, or whatever it is called that tracks actors), and she's had modest success as an actress. as the pictures will show, she appears black. her mom and mine were sisters, so her dad was black (Joseph, wonderful man).
anyway, she visited us a year or so ago, on her way to her next gig in VA, and we had time to visit. at one point, she starts going on about how tough it was coming up black.
whoa, cousin, time out.
did you choose your mom and dad? me either. you grew up in a loving home, with both parents, you got to choose your college and your career path. i'd say that was pretty privileged.
getting back to your point, i just ignore these virtue signalers. let them yammer on about their struggles and tough life. guess what, we all have tough lives, it's just that she has a camera and a microphone pointed at her, and she's expected to say something, so she does. no matter how dumb it is when you think it through. because most people don't think it through.
"oh, i'm sorry i'm lilly white and rich, here, have some money, I feel better now!"
lady, go do something useful.

While I agree with your sentiments completely, what compelled you to comment on such a contentious issue? Being "(somewhat) in the public spotlight" and having a "reputation and standard to uphold" you surely knew feathers would be ruffled. Why put yourself at risk professionally?
Cliff Notes: Social Media is not your friend.
Carry on. Carefully.

Have you ever heard the term "paraphrase"? And yes, I got the inspiration from that episode, but not that scene.

You are absolutely correct. I commented on a friends post, and I wasn't aware that this particular person was also a "friend" with my "friend" - Regardless, as an update to the situation, she was confronted directly about picking on me, and completely acquiesced. There were much much ruder comments on the thread than I posted, for some reason this person decided to go after me.
Going forward, I'm staying off of Social Media for awhile. Need a break from the nonsense.

Good on you for speaking the truth. So many are trying to avoid conflict, the liars are often running unopposed.
What these "white privilege" idiots need to understand is that EVERYONE born in the US of A has a tremendous advantage over people born in places like Sub-Saharan Africa. Yes, some in the US get more advantages at birth than others, and it's generally pretty easy to find someone who was more advantaged than you, but it doesn't change the fact that somewhere between a third and half of the population of the world would gladly trade places with you. So shut up you privileged American!

Exactly. :seasix:
All one has to do is read what Patricia Arquette said and it should become immediately apparent to anyone with an IQ over 50 that she isn't bolted together properly. Why any logical thinking human being would take time to respond to such an insipid remark is beyond me. When she stops making second rate movies and actually does something for the betterment of the world, it might get my attention.
As I stated in another post regarding social media, if you put yourself in the line of fire, you shouldn't complain when you get shot.

I would like to think that, unless it happened to interfere with a large project, my employer would defend my right to my opinion when not at work.
...but maybe not.
