Tried to buy another bottle of Mac 25 today ($2k), but none to be had, and no 21, so I settled for an 18 year for $360.

Still fantastic taste, but way more bite than the 21 or 25. I'm definitely hooked on the uber expensive stuff. :datawiz: It's all Scott's fault.

Honestly, I hate hard alcohol, but I very much do appreciate extremely fine scotch. As soon as I can get another bottle of Mac 25, I'll get it. I will always have that on hand. It's fun to share. I certainly had some last night, and today had the first hangover I've had in about 15 years after celebrating the work win yesterday.

21 year Mac seems to be the sweet spot. Would like to find more of that. Probably 700-800 these days, but not 2k.

I'm tickled to be at a point in my career that I have no clue what things cost. I bought a new battery for the lawn tractor today and had no clue what it cost until I logged into my credit card website.

I just texted one of my club members to have her friend come pick up over 300 pounds of aluminum cans so she can take them to the recycle center and get some cash. That used to be fun, but now it's a pain in the ass. Certainly not worth my time. If someone, who really wants and needs the cash, they can stop by my house quarterly and get 150#'s of cans. :yesnod:

I just don't want to put them at the street. I'd rather someone enjoy the cash that they bring to them.

saw a Dave Ramsey video earlier, and he had a study that found that the most significant contributor to having money in retirement was that you saved money early and often. not the rate of return, not what kind of fund you put your money into.

so i did some math (don't worry, it's not that painful).

example 1, salary of 80k, 30 years of saving/investing, set aside 15% (12k), assume 6% annual return (quite doable, moderate risk needed), you'd end up with $1,017,620

example 2, salary of 80k, 30 years of saving/investing, set aside 5% (4k), because you want to live larger, assume 12% annual return (hard to do long term, lot of risk to be taken on), you'd end up with $1,085,170

i'll stick with option 1 Alex, not that hard to live a little simpler for peace of mind and options later.

end of math...

My wife is option A, and her IRA is massive.

I turned a corner in 2014 when I got slapped up the side of my face and I was a dinosaur. Honestly, I had no clue how to get my next job. Since then, I've reinvented myself in the cloud software business and I'm relevant again. My earnings in these following 15 years will dwarf the amount my wife has amassed in her account. :yesnod:

And again....we have a mortgage on a house with 300k equity, and just Patty's Subaru car loan. 3 of my 4 credit cards have negative balances at the moment. I'm definitely in the savings and investing mode for sure, but my ability to build pure cash wealth is still in full swing.

I was in Scotland several years ago for work. Tasted lots of Scotch with a local coworker. I asked him “If you could only have one Scotch what would it be?” After thinking about it he said Highland Park. Not a traditional Scottish name, but very good. The 25 YO is amazing.

Doug, don't get me wrong. My raise at the new company is a net of about 4k/month. I'm instantly bumping checking to savings transfers by another 2k a month, adding an additional 800 to the monthly mortgage payment, and now my 2021 C8 is paid for. I could afford the C8 easily way before the new job, and despite all the newfound money, all I'm doing is putting it away.

I will always have nice cars. Hell, I told my wife I could go buy a brand new Lamborghini today and it would have no dent on the finances, but I'm not mentally in that place anymore. I will have 1 Corvette at a time, and when it's paid for, I'll buy another. I will have a collection...GWiz will inherit it. I don't do debt anymore.

My first “The Macallan” was the result of reading Neil Peart’s book, his regular was 18, so I asked for a bottle for Christmas. When my wife handed it to me she said, “this is a one time event.”

Since then I get a less expensive The Macallan most birthdays. The best one I had was from a couple of years ago, is was a Gold addition, or something like that, it was wonderful...and currently not available.

I can’t say I can tell that much difference between the 12 and 18 (not $300 worth anyway). One thing I do with all my whiskeys and scotch is I open the bottle and leave the cap or cork resting loosely on the top for a week or ten days. This really smooths it out. And always neat.

I've done it maybe 5 times in my life at most. If UD jumped up and said that based on his yellow pad analysis, I had only done it 3 times, I wouldn't argue.

A couple of years ago, at Christmas time, we had a "perfect storm" of folks who really enjoy expensive beers, and planned a get-together. I bought 2 4-packs of Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA at about $10 per bottle, and a couple of other very expensive beers that weren't quite that pricey, put them in a cooler, and we all enjoyed some of the fruits of my labors. It was a "playmate" cooler that had about $200 of beer in it. Others at the same get-together also brought unusual, hard-to-get beers that were very expensive. We probably went through more than $500 in beer in 2 hours. Good times. We still talk about it once in a while. :yesnod:

I would do it again in a heartbeat. Why do I bother to make the money I make if I am not going to enjoy it with my friends and family when the opportunity presents itself?

I like the Glenmorangie 18 that you do and the price is great. I also like the $360 bottle of Macallan 18 as a substitute for the 21 and 25. I have zero issue spending that amount, but understand that "with the new facts as of late", this is an easy thing for me. I still want to restock the 25 year Mac, but can absolutely see having an 18 year on hand at all times.

I recently tried Redbreast 12 at a restaurant. I liked it so much that I bought a bottle for my SIL. He likes his Jameson.

If you like Macallan, Try it's doppelganger-Yamazaki. If you can find it.

The Japanese make whisky to rival any Scotch.

When the C8 arrives (down to 13th on the list...any day now), I plan on setting up an outing to Fort Myers for those interested in attending. It will be planned over a race weekend, so we'll be able to sample Corvettes at the track and I'll be sure to have a fresh bottle of each of the following Macallan years:

12 ($80)
15 ($135)
18 ($360)
21 ($600)
25 ($2,000)
Jug of sweet tea for Doug ($4)

That list should be good enough for some flights to sample. :seasix: I don't mind spending $3k so my forum friends can enjoy something they may otherwise never enjoy. :cert:

Nice way to wind down for the evening. :cert:

Hard part for me is finding a cigar that pairs well with my scotch.
Too mild and the taste isn't there, too dark/full-bodied, and it ruins the scotch palate.

Whisky (without the 'e') is a broader category of which Scotch is a subset.
Whiskey (with the 'e') is mainly produced in Ireland. Same stuff, but they spell it differently because Marketing. So yeah, you shouldn't use the term "whiskey" to describe Scotch - it makes you look like an ignorant n00b. :D

Macallan 18 is good. Macallan 25 is WAY WAY better (and getting harder to find. It's actually pretty tasty. Despite being 31 years, it has about the same amount of bite that the Macallan 18 has, but NOWHERE NEAR Macallan 25, but at $180/bottle, I could definitely rock this. It's a much lighter color than Macallan, and has nowhere near the bouquet or the flavor that Macallan does, but again, for $180, I consider it something I'd get again. :datawiz:

I like the fact that I'm a beer drinker, ... Heineken in particular, and I've never been a hard alcohol drinker. I pay my local Speedway gas station a king's ransom for cases of the 24 oz. cans of Heineken. The manager orders 12 cases every few weeks just for me. I know it's a shit ton more expensive than just buying the regular sized cans at the grocery store, but I don't care.

With scotch, I also don't care. Scott introduced me to QUALITY scotch, and since then I've been hooked. I have the ability to buy some amazing scotch, and I will continue to do so. :yesnod:

NOT a good idea. :nono:

Risks of Mixing Cocaine and Alcohol
Alone, both cocaine and alcohol abuse can cause considerable damage to the body, from overdose to long-term, chronic health issues. Together, many of the health dangers increase.

Cocaethylene: A Deadly Byproduct
One of the most serious problems with mixing alcohol and cocaine occurs when the two are metabolized through the liver. The organ produces cocaethylene, which can build up in the body and put stress on major organ systems, particularly the cardiovascular system and the liver itself.

Cocaethylene temporarily enhances the high associated with both cocaine and alcohol, but this euphoria also increases blood pressure, aggressive and violent thoughts, and poor judgment. It will build up to toxic levels in the liver. An increase in cocaethylene has also been linked to sudden death.

Consequences from cocaethylene production include:

Myocardial infarction, or heart attack with heart pain
Cerebral infarction, or death of blood vessels and brain tissue, leading to brain damage, stroke, or aneurysm
Intracranial hemorrhage
Cardiomyopathy, or heart disease
Cardiac arrhythmia, which can contribute to a later heart attack

You can't beat Costco customer service.

I purchased a big screen TV from them back in the day when they were fairly expensive and not just a throw away item when things went bad. After 1.5 yrs., the screen went out on it. I called the store and talked with the manager. He said to bring it back. No box, no receipt, I hauled back into the store on one of their little flat carts. He said, go pick you out a new one around $xxx amount - actually more than what I had paid for the original. Zero out of pocket for me to upgrade. Most would have told me to talk to the mfg.

Maybe they are like CC companies and just write crap off to keep a customer. Which is the way things should be. No hassle returns and keep the customer for life.

Wonder if people buy the empty ones, fill it with shit scotch, and then pawn it off as the real thing, or simply do it for bragging rights to make it look like their liquor cabinet is well stocked. :willy:

Think of it like a core charge...lightens the load a little...
