How many hours have you logged with a metronome?
How many lessons have you taken?
What did your average practice session look like? (Duration, frequency, activities)
How many hours logged playing with other players?

Here’s the thing. “Study” and “practice” have different meanings.

Study could mean learning songs or going to conservatory. Practice might mean noodling in front of the tv or doing hours of specific exercises.

Another huge factor is that people give up too soon. If you want to play, you need to dedicate a year or two just to sound anything remotely close to “music”.

Most people get frustrated before that point and quit prematurely. You have to ignore how badly you sound during that period. Then keep learning for the rest of your life.

Not digging on you. Genuinely curious. Give me a sense of what you did to learn.

I used to teach up to fifty private lessons a week. EVERY student who worked at it, learned to play. Several went on to major music schools and are pro players now. I just was contacted by one student who is a ****ing ace player now.

When I was a kid, I spent at least four hours a day learning songs and solos from records. Then, when tab came about, I learned entire artist catalogs (Rush, SRV, Boston, Etc.). Hundreds of songs.

I also played with my friends who were st similar levels of development and learned from better players. By the time I was 18, I played 3-4 gigs a week with different bands. I also went to open jams to learn how to improvise. I played scales until my fingers literally bled.

I performed 5-6 times a week for seven years (18-25) with dozens of different bands. I studied all the great blues originators, learning all their stuff.

At 25, I dropped out of music to go to school. Except I had only one skill to pay for it, so it was back to 3-4 gigs a week, plus teaching for another five years.

I started a company and performed 2-3x a week for another 18 years.

I didn’t take any lessons but learned (stole) things from hundreds of players. I stoped practicing many years ago and generally don’t rehearse but my point is, I did a lot of that.

I also habe spend many many hours doing ear training. Specific exercises to recognize pitch and intervals. Very boring but invaluable.

This is the effort it takes. (And I’m mediocre compared to the players around me).

Joe Bonamassa practiced 12 hours a day.

Malcom Gladwell’s book “Outliers” features a study that established that mastery requires on average at least 10k hours no matter the subject.

I’ve learned to deeply respect him but his music just doesn’t ring my bell. It’s sloppy, muddy and inconsistent. However, as an adult, I have studied it and his playing is remarkable. I just don’t dig that style.

I’m pretty much a blues traditionalist. It’s what I like and what I play. I dig all kinds of traditional American music from Detroit Soul and Muscle Shoals R&B to Gospel and old country. Clean, precise music with feel.

Also never got into the Beatles either. I think they are amazing but it doesn’t appeal to me. Too many chords.

Took lessons once a week for a few months from an accomplished geezer. Practiced practiced practiced. Developed callouses. Can tune a guitar by ear. Have music books, notes and tab. I can read music, kinda. I know where notes are. I can strum and play notes, even learn simple melodies on my own by ear. I dabble; cannot play. Picked up my decent Yamaha acoustic yesterday. Tuned it. Dabbled. Put it away. Some of us just ain’t got it. I am hopeless. Pathetic, I know.

I remember reading an interview with one of Eric Johnson’s producers who said; His technical ability is phenomenal but I wish he’d just bash around a bit more.

Eric lives in Austin. I get to see him in clubs. I only knew his slick commercial playing. That fluid, formal stuff. But the fact is Eric can play ANYTHING. I’ve seen him chicken pickin like Albert Lee and hitting Albert King like a bell. He can play jazz like a mother.

He can also dial in and out the reckless abandon of which you speak. I think with Jimi, his technical chops were always there but he was fall down wasted for all his recordings. Plus he had very bombastic drummers.

Truth be told, I’m not much of a rock fan anymore. I’m a groove player. I love to play just behind or in front of the beat. The best ensembles push and pull like this even in one song. Parts will be slightly ahead of the best and other parts behind. This is the definition of “swing feel”.

I love AC/DC. They are unbelievably precise and tight. But they don’t swing. We call it “four on the floor feel” the Stones swing. Knofler, Gatton, Chet, all blues guys, Buck Owens all swing. Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Brian Setzer swing.

Even some REO swings. White people swing.

I recently read “Peak” by Anders Ericsson. It’s all about how to achieve world class performance and he uses musicians as one of his examples throughout the book. In short, if you’re not *constantly* pushing yourself to improve you never will. He goes on to say if you reach a certain level or proficiency, unless you continue to push, you will even lose the skills you have to some degree.

The 10,000 hour rule can be traced back to a paper Ericsson wrote in the early 90’s.

Very true. I’m relentless. Not about my own playing Necessarily but with regard to band leading. I fired my brother. Twice. I’ve been known to dock pay for being late, wearing the wrong clothes or showing up unprepared. I push people who are far better musicians than me. Then I work like hell to keep up.

I will call out anyone if they aren’t giving me what I want since I always have a clear vision of the sound I’m after. I’m not a dick about it but they know I’m not ****ing around. In fact it has gained me respect from the best players. And they always go the extra mile for me.

It’s weird because it’s counter intuitive. I used to think being laid back was the way. **** that. I want people to be astonished at my shows. I hope they are.

That’s the secret behind those big shows. My producer and I won’t compromise.
