My first exposure to army folks in any scale at all occurred in Mogadishu in 1994. There was an army transportation outfit setting up adjacent to us. I noted several slims at that time were sporting dreds. I guess they became outlawed at some point?

Upon further review, perhaps they were cornrows. I don’t recall exactly. All I know is my Marines could not wear their hair that way.
