In case you’re wondering why Fred tagged me here, Fred has this perverse cat training theory where he claims if he got my Siamese cats soon enough, he could train them not to get in to shit, be curious, explore essentially, their genetic make up, their true nature that is not only instinctual but highly entertaining.

So since he has re-interjected me into this argument, I ask you Fred, what would you do to train such animals to behave contrary to their natural instinct, something they enjoy, and second why would you want to even do that?

All of my cats have had free reign of the house pretty much all the time. When they chose to sleep in the bed it was usually at the foot but our last kitteh liked to sleep curled up between the two stacks of pillows. Except for occasionally waking up to the sound of a hairball ejection in progress they never disturbed me at night. I never had to do anything consciously to achieve that, it's just how they all turned out. Guess I'm just a natural.

So you don’t have any method behind your now non theory, just let them roam?

:skep:

All cats require training. Like with any other behavior, you have to let them know what is acceptable and what isn't. You teach them not to scratch the furniture, not to scratch and bite you, etc. Cats are creatures of habit and once they develop a daily ritual they tend to stick to it. I have never had to consciously train any cat not to keep me awake at night, it just naturally falls out of all the general training that takes place.

In any case, locking your kittehs up at night (https://www.thevettebarn.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1840711#post1840711) is one more reason you are UniqueDoug :D

WGAF if they roam? You obviously haven’t lived with curious Siamese cats who are constantly seeking out new things to get into.

Our exchange was never solely based on my sleep cycle. You claimed to have methods to prevent them getting into things but have yet to reveal anything except that you do nothing.

Well guess what, my cats get in to ****ing everything lol We actually make games out of it, two of them are infatuated with twisty ties so I leave one hidden in remote areas, also if you saw how happy they were when they get to come in a restricted area, they’re purring in ecstasy. So by letting them free roam the whole house you take that pleasure away from them shame on you lol

Exactly, now you’re getting it. They are happy excited ready for the next quadrant to open up that they can explore, be loved sit on my lap watching Fox News, go to the tub for morning and evening streams to lap up like in the wild.

Free roamers lose all the excitement of exploring and new things. These cats are as stimulated as they were when they were kittens.

Try this, cut your cat off from one of his favorite rooms, half-day day whatever it takes for him to beg you to go back in there, and then when he goes back in put a new toy in there, rinse and repeat cut off new toy and make a game out of it keeps them on their “hunting” toes and they love it.

Now it’s possible your cat(s) are just lazy with weak hunting genes, if so disregard.

Yep, probably one of the smartest decisions I made was not to get married.

Edit, one cat is purring on my lap right now, one is over my left shoulder on their special chair, the other is on my bed grooming

Didn't know you posted over here but when you leave such a big opening, I have to. It was your decision not to get married? :kick:

Well done.:seasix: what does that leave you for misc.?:cert:

What do you code as miscellaneous? I currently calculate and code around 17 expenditures so your miscellaneous might already be coded elsewhere. That being said I do have a miscellaneous in there for something that falls out of the 17, it’s 150 bucks.

It's raining and really cold here, like in the 40's. Fuzz wants to go sit on the patio and watch it rain, then come back in a few minutes later, then be let out again, then come back in.....rinse and repeat. Now she's complaining because I'm tired of letting all the store bought heat out.

I think we're going to have to have our cats left eye removed. She's had what we've been treating as an infection with no improvement. The vet says it may be turning cancerous, and although the globe of her eye is fine all the surrounding tissue is inflamed.

Instead of having the hairy ***** running around the place you'll have a one eyed monster to deal with now. :leaving:

Sirius, hope the cat is o.k.

I could see how that could be confusing if she's trying to give you the stink eye. Could use either end.

:hide:

Seriously, sorry about your buddy. Hopefully she'll recover and not need the surgery, but if she does, she'll probably be OK, too, just need a little time to adjust. Animals are pretty resilient.

Well we had her eye removed yesterday. She's home but not very happy with me. I don't blame her. The vet said the bone underneath in her cheek area also seemed to be affected. They suspect cancer but we'll wait and see and hope she heals up with a few good years left to her. The vet records say we 1st brought her there 12 yrs and 10 months ago. At that time they estimated her age to be about 5 yrs. So she's had a good long life no matter what happens.
