His legato technique is pretty much the benchmark all others are judged by. He released a ton of albums but never really found mainstream success outside of guitar circles.
Say what you want about the likes of AC/DC but there's a reason they've been massively successful. Songs matter.

Selling out to teenagers when you're old enough to be their father or grandfather. I'd rather have my peers and the top musicians at my concerts than a bunch of screaming kids and 19 year old groupies in my hotel.

He wasn't looking for mainstream. Like most great jazz artist, it's for the love of music, not drugs money and girls 25 years younger than you.
