You need boot from a repair disk.

If you have another computer you can make one.

shut it off and unplug any unnecessary usb devices and turn it back on...see if that helps

Nothing plugged in, I'm able to get a menu screen by holding F8

If you can't pick the safe option, your hosed. You might try one of those PC repair shops and see if they have an XP repair disk. If you're lucky the drive isn't bad.

you can pull the drive and put it in another pc and run chkdsk on it. If you don't have a way of doing that, and this PC is important to you, I'd just take to the guy. If they can't fix it, they can recover your data.

So you installed a program and now it won't boot up? The plot thickens.
If you can't get into safe mode you will need a recovery disk.
There are other options... Big hammer is one. :kick:

You need a Windows boot disk. Then you can run the command: chkdsk /f /r
because it sounds like hard drive corruption, sectors that can't be read, hard drive failure, or the boot sector of the hard drive has issues.

There is a tool called "spinrite" that I've used before to fix bad and unreadable areas of the hard drive.

arrow up and highlight one of the options. Try the safe mode. Highlight it and let it reboot. Then try the others. You don't have to hit enter.

If you select 'command prompt'
type in: chkdsk /f*
