Hey look...a lurker started a thread! :kimblair:
Anyone into PC gaming? If so, what are some good easy games to start with these days? I haven't been into gaming for a really long time and even then wasn't really that much into it.
I'm looking for first person shooter type games and racing/driving games (all Windows PC based). I don't want anything that requires reading a book to figure out how to play (nobody got time for that).
Thanks!!
I will ask my kid. :seasix:

Doom, Wolfenstein, Resident Evil come to mind.
If you want something with modern action, Call of Duty.

Looks like you are ready for most games. :seasix: The only game I play on PC these days is a heavily modded Skyrim.

or Asteroids?
or PacMan?

I wonder if there is Galaga for PC. I played that arcade game for hours on one quarter back in the day.

I've been playing for a long time. I play most days, either on line with TFC2, or solo with some older games I've kept over the years. Hell, I still have my original DOOM manual and receipt, but I lost the floppy disks. I just finished playing 3 hours of TFC2 on line.
If you have a good machine, there is a new DOOM that came out - DOOM Internal.

You can also get DOOM 2016 for less than $10 bucks on Steam. Oh, the other game I like is Serious Sam.

Our "big" Christmas present for my brothers and myself in 1972 was PONG.
That was great :yesnod:
Battlefield is the one I always gravitate towards. They have ww1 ww2 and modern. Check them out. Always a good time.

Doom Eternal is out now, it looks amazing.
Call of Duty has a new battle royal game that I've watched streamers play and it's wild. But it's best played with two other players and you need to communicate/coordinate a lot to do well.
PUBG (Player Unknown's Battle Ground) is a first person shooter battle royal that has probably the best gun play out there right now. You can pay as a single player, two persons, or up to four man squads. The thing is, the player base is pretty good at the game, you will die a lot at first. A. Lot.
Apex Legends is another FPS, it's sorta like a sci-fi PUBG.
If you want to watch how good gamers play COD or PUBG, check out chocotaco and hambinooo on twitch. Choco is playing both games currently, kinda switching back and forth from one day to the next. hambinooo is playing PUBG pretty much six days a week. If they're not live, just watch one of their recent videos. It will give you an idea of what strats you need to do well.

One of my favorite first person shooter team based games is still TF2 (Team Fortress 2). It's been around since 2007 so it plays on today's low end machines. It's a lot of fun and has different classes for different player styles. ...and it's F2P! (Free to Play) on Steam.

I loved the WW2 flight sims back in the '90s. Last year, a new old stock 386/VGA computer showed up for sale at $25.00. I thought...I will buy that and load up my old games to play again. I bought it and looked at some YT games that I loved back then. They looked so pathetic now I didn't even bother setting it up or loading the games. I don't know how many hours I wasted back then on them. Kind of like watching reruns of some of my old fav. TV shows. Can't stand 2 minutes of them now :)
I did love MOH series on my PS2.

My 62 year old brother wanted me to build him a XP gaming rig that had games for single play only - i.e. no internet connection. So I had some spare motherboards laying around and other spare parts. I found a guy about 20 miles away selling new PC cases that were brand new but ~20 years old that he had kept in his garage. So I bought 2 new cased for only $20 a piece that also included a new power supply, then I actually built 2: one for myself and one for my brother. The hardware build was easy, but the software installation took a long time. I had to search and get some copies of older games off the net. Each build has XP Pro with 3 gig of ram installed. More than enough to play older games on XP.
These older games play great on somewhat modern hardware from 8-10 years ago. I stayed with regular spinners, one for the boot drive and one to house all the games. The boot drive is a Western Digital Raptor that is 75GB in size, perfect for a boot drive that runs at 10,000 rpm. I then used a 500GB 7200 rpm for the games. That build in the pic I kept for myself, and gave my brother the other build with regular 7200 rpm IDE hard drives.

For $20 I wouldn't complain but that is the JC Whitney of computer cases. :ack:

For $20 I wouldn't complain but that is the Eli Whitney of computer cases. :ack:Yeah I know but I'm not knocking it for only $20, which includes a new power supply and the mobo fits with no issues. The front of that case does open:

Notice the colors don't match? Ha-ha...I really did not care since the 2 builds cost me less than $50.

I have been playing this a ton lately and it's really good. It's cross platform so PC, Xbox and PS are all together.

Looks like a lot of people have been looking for ways to get an edge. From my experience, Kernaim cheats (https://kernaim.to/) have been one of the more reliable options out there. The setup was pretty simple, and I didn’t run into any issues getting things going. Compared to some of the others I’ve tried, they seem to stay updated pretty well, which is a big deal if you don’t want constant headaches.

I bought an arcade game system that has all of those. Must be a dozen Pac Mans on it. At least 15 Ms. Pac Mans. All the Donkey Kongs. Dig Dug, Galaga, Centipede, etc... It has 4,538 games in all. Pretty much everything ever released in America, Japan, Korea, and Europe.

I quite playing TF2 and moved to playing Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. Both excellent games with an excellent story. You can read the plot here:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4044024/plotsummary/
So in a nutshell, a world (~2060) a corporation run by a guy built "peace keepers" machines, he over coded them to where they were consuming biomass as fuel and self replication, and they eventually became self aware. Sound familiar?
It's a really well done game. Probably the best one I've played with this kind of story.

I remember endless hours on Activision, River Raid and Pitfall.
I also think that both Forza and Gran Turismo deliver at least 80% of the realism that a simulator does, for a fraction of the cost.
