got this in the mail yesterday from JRD77VET (Jeff), was soaking wet when i pulled it out of the 32 pound box, so i took it down to the shop this morning and coated it with some melted paraffin wax. that will slow down its drying, and minimize cracking. rule of thumb is 1 year for each inch of thickness. since Jeff says that this tree has been down for a few years, i'm hopeful that that time span has already started, and I don't have to wait 6 years to use this in some manner.

no idea what i'm going to make out of it yet, if you have an idea, post it up.

it's about 11x11x6 :faint:

i do know that it will NOT be made into a bowl, that would be too wasteful of the wood, and it's a little too big to turn well on my small lathe.

I do have a bandsaw that I could use to re-cut it into thinner pieces, so that's an option.

could make a box or two out of it.

You could make an awesome cigar humidor. I’ll PM my address for you to ship it to.

Thanks! :cert:

The box can be whatever material you want. However, the box would be lined with cedar. :seasix::seasix:

Good to see it made it out safely. In the picture, the left side was towards the center of the tree. The right side had a trim cut to get the 11" dimension. ( if that helps the way you end up cutting it ). The end towards the camera ( narrow vertical ) was "up".

The tree has been dead but upright for at least 3 or 4 years. We just had it pushed over late fall.

We have a mature liquidambar aka sweet gum tree that needs to come down. I could send you a hunk.

That block appears to have some nice figure in it. A thin slice would make excellent blanks for custom grips for your range toys.

i tried making 1911 grips a few years ago.....it's not my specialty.

I have tried on a couple of occasions as well, making it a bit further into the process each time until I made a fatal error of some sort. I hope to try again and this thread caused me to start shopping for a couple nice blanks but nicely figured stock that's wide enough for the set I wish to try has become quite pricey especially with current freight rates.

Since I intend to succeed this time around I don't want to start with common clear stock, just to have to duplicate the effort immediately.
