View Full Version : Stupid or inattentive utility people

My water usage is usually between 3000 and 4000 a month. My current bill says I used 131930. One would think someone would say "that can't be right". Nope. They sent me the bill anyway. Over $1400. Idiots.
It isn't just utility people. We had a guy try and order 1 case of pizza for an account, somehow 1,111 cases were picked and shipped. His handheld button stuck or somehow mis-entered. Nobody even blinked that it could be an error. :kick:

That's OK. I am on a well and septic system but our local water department sends me bills for municipal services at least twice a year.
I hope you get things ironed out.

The mind is a terrible thing :bslap:
Happened to my son years ago and they wouldn't do anything about it. He had to pay.

I would tell them to come shut my meter off... which they could not do since there isn't one.

It ain't jest public utilities, but also most other services, like anything to do with streaming TV over the .net or any common sense item these daze, last night I found that somehow some nitwit in some obscure operation in the line between Fox News and my TV, comcrap, ammozone, watt evea got to the 'service' and locked it all up, so I went back to ROKU .....why they get all stoopid over Fox News, but yet 200 other silly old movie channels appear on the screen in LR or BR with no hassle.....and no stooooopid programming errors/interference
I mean like WTF, can't anyone do their damn JOB these daze???

If you find you have a leak and you prove you had it fixed, many utilities will give a break on the bill.

Yeh, I getting/been nervous about the supply line from the meter at the curb, to the house, it's the old original galv iron from '72, when house was built....., rest of house from valve in front yard is plastic, PVC, I got lucky in that the DWV is plastic, so 1/2 was there, several houses on this street have had all the supply lines replaced in the last 23 years.....:issues::dance:

That happened at our first house. On a well and septic and the municipality wants you to hook up. So they get a law that says as soon as the lines go by your house and are working you get a bill. Not for usage for service. They win in court.
To me not that big of a deal. I wanted sewer and water, and I hooked us up right from the get-go! People that did not hook up also paid. The usage charge was the smaller charge!

Usually you are responsible only for post meter or from the right of way. I had water coming from ground before the meter once, no charge to fix it.
Sewer lines going into the main keep breaking at a friends house from a bad main install about 10 years ago (mains have settled alot). City has to cover it since it's their connection and in the street. Unfortunately they haven't covered the backup into basements that have occurred. :barf:
Had him add backup coverage to his insurance because of it. Wasn't very much to add.

Hope for a bad meter. If not the leak is on your side and you are responsible for it. Best not to call them an idiot they may forgive the bill if it is in fact yours. I would be looking for leaks if you have pores soil it can be hard to find might have to do some digging.

Back in the early 80's the county where I grew up in rural Appalachian Va, decided that running county water to the area where I lived would be a great idea. Mind you, everyone already had working wells. Anyway, my Mom didn't feel the need to hook up to it, for the obvious reasons. They sent bills every month charging us for water, when we were not even physically connected to it. We finally lost the battle, under threat of a lien against her house, and had to pay for all the water we never used. Seems like thievery to me.:yesnod:

I got a similar call from a client. turned out he had just replaced the diesel fire pump for his life safety system and the testing used a chit ton of water. had he not fought with the utility, we could have helped him get an exemption, but since he made a big stink, it cost him.

Happened to me once, they misread my meter. I called to flag the issue, they admitted on the phone their their system had flagged the error and they had already sent somebody out to check my meter...but they asked i pay the inflated bill anyways and theyd fix my next bill. (FU not a chance)

I got a call from the water dept. in a small town where I have a convenience office telling me they are recording 300 gal/minute running. I called the landlord who said he was sure it was a leak between the street and the building. Turns out someone had turned on an outside faucet and just let it run.

Does the reading on your bill match your meter? Maybe you have a leak. :D

I had a branch accidentally order 1,200 2hp submersible motors. There are many safeguards in place to keep this from happening including Purchase Order Review, Order Acknowledgement from the manufacturer, daily reports, etc...
Of course, all the manufacturer had to do was call and say "uh, this is incorrect, no?".
Nope. Everything failed and two truckloads of motors showed up to the branch.

It was a very bad leak, but not at my house. I don't understand how I can be charged that much when the leak wasn't where I live. Sounds like thievery to me.

The last leak started when we were getting record rainfall and the ground was standing water. By the time it dried out the leak had gotten bad enough for the bill to be way high. I was also working 7 days a week and just paid every bill online without checking them closely. It leaked for 8 months. They only adjusted for 3 of those months. You might recall a thread about the leak actually ending up in the house it got so bad.

The leak was a big one down the road. No idea how it appeared on my bill.
