OAK PARK, Ill. — A state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would ban pumping your own gas starting next year.

Camille Lilly (D-Oak Park) sponsored House Bill 4571, which had its first reading on Feb. 5. It was subsequently referred to the House Rules Committee.

If passed, the bill would create the Gas Station Attendant Act. It states that no gas may be pumped at a gas station in Illinois unless it is pumped by a gas station attendant.

Lilly has not discussed why she proposed the bill, but in New Jersey, the only state with such a law, the reasoning is fire safety, citing drivers who may leave engines running, careless smokers and more static electricity from cell phones.

Oregon loosened its mandatory law two years ago.

While hiring attendants would create more jobs, the cost would likely be passed on to consumers already paying a higher Illinois gas tax.

It's weird that state government keeps harassing its citizens more and more, and the citizenry keeps voting for the people who do it to them. Is Illinois populated by BDSM enthusiasts?

In NJ, it is ILLEGAL to pump your own gas. No matter what kind of car you have, or how the gas enters the car, you can be cited for pumping your own gas, and the attendants at 99+% of gas stations will tell you that, and not sell you gas if you insist on pumping it yourself.

That said, I have my local station totally trained. I pull up in my Explorer or my wife's MDX, and I let them do their thing. When I pull up in my C3, they don't even get close to the car. They come over and wait by the pump while I get the hose ready, and run their card for me when I am ready to start filling, and I never hear any shit about it. I've owned the car for 12 years, and it has been this way for about 5 years, which means it took me about 7 years to train the monkeys there in this manner. I could have trained stupid dogs faster, but at this point, I can't complain.

I would like to know what her “logic” was for this bill. But then logic and Illinois Democrat’s very rarely enter the same areas in a Venn Diagram

You think that is bad, there in CA they are already looking at generating a tax on the number of miles you drive due to the changes in fuel efficiencies and electric cars. They say it will eliminate the gas tax but that is total BULL.

When I go to Missouri from Alabama, we go up Hwy 24 to 57 then to 64. I always make sure I fill up in Paducah so I'm not giving Illinois any money. I can make it on one tank, but if traffic gets heavy, it gets close.

And no f'in way am I stopping in East St. Louis for gas!
