Got an alert earlier on my Citizen app that a helicopter crashed in Calabasas (it’s about 12 miles from me) at about 10:00 AM.

Now I just got a news alert that Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash. Can’t get the article to pull up, though.

Yes. There are a bunch of sources reporting the crash. But not many confirming Kobe Bryant was on board. Probably trying to be cautious.

(CNN) — Five people were killed Sunday in a helicopter crash on a hillside in Calabasas, California, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The sheriff's department received reports of the downed aircraft just after 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m PT), officials said in a tweet.

A helicopter crashed on a hillside in Calabasas, California.

Flames have been extinguished, the department said.

Calabasas is about 30 miles west of Los Angeles.

I was watching some of the videos on the citizen app as it was happening because they were saying it sparked a small brush fire, which can become a big fire quickly here.

I have friends who went to high school with Mr Bryant. I am aware of his excellence on the court but never followed him. Of the people in my circle of friends who knew him personally, he was generally loved and thought of as a really good dude.

It was pretty foggy this morning. The marine layer had rolled in. I wonder if that played a part in it. If they needed to land quickly, they were not far from the freeway. Not ideal, but it would’ve been out of those mountains that were probably obscured by fog.

Kobe Bryant's helicopter circled 10 times above Los Angeles aerospace before it crashed killing all nine people onboard.

Radar shows how the aircraft hovered over the city of Glendale for 15 minutes before it eventually slammed into a mountainside in Calabasas, around 20 miles from downtown LA.

It was later reported that his daughter, Gianna, was also on board at the time of the crash.

Dispatch audio has been released in which the operator is heard directing emergency personnel to the crash scene.

Data provided by Flightradar24 showed that the S-76 helicopter took off from nearby Orange County and is believed to have been travelling to the city of Thousand Oaks.

Judging by the flight path taken, the chopper carrying Bryant circled at least 10 times over a period of 15 minutes before crashing.

It is believed they were on their way to basketball practice when the crash took place.

Initial reports suggest that conditions were foggy when the aircraft came down at around 10am local time.

The NBA star regularly used his Sikorsky S-76 helicopter to travel to and from matches at the LA Laker's Staples Center.

"It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Kobe Bryant and four others in a helicopter crash in Calabasas. The aircraft went down in a remote field off Las Virgenes around 10:00 this morning. Nobody on the ground was hurt," the city of Calabas said on Twitter.
