My precious grandma was a "diversify kind of gal" when it came to finances. We were often gifted gold, precious gemstones and EE savings bonds.

Bonds that have reached their max 20 maturity and have been reinvested elsewhere, EE bonds are gauranteed to double in value at 20 years.

Would you let ALL bonds reach maturity or place in another investment PRE maturity?

My newest bond will not mature for another 19 years.

WWVB do?

It would really depend on the amount and your tax structure. For a small amount, let it be until such time as it matures. for a decent amount, say a few thousand, you could flip them into cash, then buy a blue chip stock which pays a decent dividend every quarter and let that ride until you need the cash later in life.
I have a stack of EE bonds I bought through my old employer back in the nineties, but cant cash them in right now due to my tax bracket so they sit in a drawer.

There is something you need to know. See this link. E bonds are guaranteed to double at the 20 year mark regardless of interest rate. Also, if you own EE bonds and cash prior to the five year mark, there is a penalty. https://www.forbes.com/sites/robertberger/2017/04/03/8-fun-facts-about-ee-bonds-including-how-to-avoid-paying-taxes-on-the-interest/#1b7e8d5655fc

I don't know... I'd error on the side of caution. The stock market is just shy of an eleven year bull run. A few months ago, MSM was thinking a recession was near and now they're all backtracking and thinking 2020 will be good. Regardless, not a good time in my opinion.

I'm that guy that is big on paying off mortgage or better yet, any other debt with higher interest and no deductions.

There are so many factors to consider and we don't know you're situation 100% so you're better off doing whatever will let you sleep better at night or if it's a lot of money, hire a professional.

Can you give us more details on what "stable growth" is? My wife and I have the same problem, we want to take some of the equity money off the table, but the question becomes "what do we do with it?".

She also wants to sell one of our investment properties, but I have some good ideas of what to do with those proceeds (basically, get into a better investment property), but we are having a very hard time finding a cash return to fund retirement until Medicare and SS kick in.

I dumped my FA when my market investments were pulling in avg 15%over 10 yrs; under my watch and his was at 10% (not counting his fees).

W/O divulging number or too many details, we are mortgage free and have no loans or CC.

Although well diversified not sure where to "invest" $ moving forward. I feel the market is at or near it's peak, so not going to add much there.

Consulted a new FA and they said we were "unicorns" in this day and age to have lived so frugal and be debt free at our age. Said we should max out our work matched retirements but did not offer any other solid advise. :popcorns:

My first house was a POS 3 bed 1200 sqft 2 car garage previous rent house that had seen major abuse. Bought for in the mid 30’s. Smelled so bad we had to put bleach on the foundation after we ripped the carpet/padding out.

Lived in it a few years, did all updates and sold it for almost double what we paid. Flipping houses can me moderately lucrative, especially if you do a lot of the work.

I’m ok with living here in my 4K sqft house, with land and being debt free. Could not do that in CA. My salary is the same in CA as it is here, just goes a hell of a lot farther here. :monkeybutt::monkeybutt:

There are great and horrible places in almost every city and state. But CA is flat out crazy expensive to live. One of my managers out there wants to step down to a sales job and move to NM or West TX. Can't say that I blame him.

Nic, good on your for living the way you do. We have done the same thing also for decades. I've had ONE toy in 27 years of marriage... a Vette I bought used. I've never had a boat, ATV, 2nd home, motorcycle, motor home or trailer... Already did that once. :yesnod:

Bought our first house in 1997 for $300,000. Sold it 4-1/2 years later for $525,000.

Bought a house in Tucson for $369,000
Sold it later for $469,000.

Moved back to SoCal, bought a house for $500,000.

This house is now worth $900,000+.

Beats the poo-poo out of Wall Street. :D

not everywhere but certainly in CA and good timing during the Great Recession everywhere else.

Well done :seasix:

Agree, if you got in years ago, your equity in your home will save you. :cert:

Parts of CA are spectacular, why we visit, but with family here and up and down the E coast, could never see us living there. Plus the taxes and liberals seem to be too much for me to tolerate.

If this question is inappropriate, I understand. But what is your annual property tax? What is your income tax % and what is sales tax? It’s hard to make your money work for you when CA wants to control so much of it.

all kidding aside, have you looked at, or do you know anything about REIT's. it may be worth exploring since you seem otherwise well sorted.

exactly why the pay off your mortgage thing doesn't matter. so long as there is an incorporated town and the bill taxes, you never own it outright. skip a tax payment or two and find out for sure.

Don’t ask me.
I’ve kept most of my money in checking accounts and 1.5% CD’s for the last 10 years.

Bought my house 10 years ago and put 150K into it and now it’s worth just slightly less than I paid for it.

I’m a financial genius.

The house we live in AND the investment property I am trying to sell are owned outright. I have a loan on the other property, but I have been paying that down pretty aggressively.

Consulted a new FA and they said we were "unicorns" in this day and age to have lived so frugal and be debt free at our age. Said we should max out our work matched retirements but did not offer any other solid advise. :popcorns:

From his perspective, you probably are unicorns because people who are good with money rarely need a fancy FA. My wife and I have always taken the max match monies that were available.

But the question still remains, where to get a decent cash income that we could live on, and pay for health insurance? I can get about 2% out of Treasuries, and decent dividend payers, but is there anything reasonably low-risk where I can get 4-5%? If so, I don't know what it is.
