The saw was almost certainly running. Most tree guys I know don't like to pull start while suspended in a tree.

The chain isn't engaged when your finger is off the throttle as a safety.
It stops almost immediately when you let off.

But yeah, boat loads of foolishness there although crazy stuff happens even to experienced tree-men.

the climber dude seemed to be experienced. As soon as things started to unravel... the first thing he does is sink his hand spikes into the trunk to get a good grip.

He also looks to be wearing decent protective gear.
