Repairing a torn tendon in her hip. Basically, she's having Tommy John surgery on her hip. I may have to brush up on my dancing after she recovers.:yesnod:

Appreciate any good thoughts you have to send our way.:seasix:

She just went into surgery about half an hour ago. She has difficulties with anesthesia allergies so she is a unique patient in that sense. Our usual anesthesiologist retired recently, so we have to "break in" a new guy. I met him today, he is a former Navy fighter pilot and Naval Academy graduate. I have lots of confidence in him. We are using a nerve block in the lower spine and electrical pulse stimulation to cancel pain. She will be conscious during the surgery, using noise cancelling headphones.

This is a very unique situation, but we had many meetings and planned this all out and it seems to be going well. I will keep you posted with a few hours from now. Much thanks for all the well wishes.:seasix:

Good News! I just spoke with the doctor and anesthesiologist and everything went very well and as planned. This doctor has been doing orthopedic surgeries for 35 years and he said ten years ago the just called this injury a form of bursitis and treated it with pain meds and injections for the rest of your life and you just lived with it.

He said the difference now is the MRI and other imaging capabilities they have it gives them a pretty accurate picture of what is going on and what to expect when they go in. I wouldn't call it routine yet, but I will say it went as planned. The recovery comes next, and it will take some time, but it looks like we have a bright future to look forward to.

Thank you all for all the prayers and good wishes.:seasix:

She's spending one night in the hospital, mainly so Physical Therapy can work with her tomorrow before she goes home. It's amazing what the benefits of not having conventional anesthesia are. She's not groggy, she has a full appetite, just ate a very good dinner. She's fully cognizant, two pharmacists just came in to ask about her usual daily meds and she was able to understand and answer all their questions easily, etc. She is beginning to feel a little pain since the nerve block is wearing off, but oral pain meds should handle that.

The difference between this and recovering from full anesthesia is night and day. This orthopedic surgeon has never done anything like this in his 35 years as a surgeon. We might be onto something here. :yesnod:

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Now all we have to do is get through six to eight weeks without putting weight on her right leg.:yesnod:

Yes, but she will mostly be using a walker around the house. Steps are the main difficulty for now.

Doing well. She's getting around the house pretty well with a walker, but it's going to be awhile until she can walk. Pain is less than she expected and she is pretty much handling it with Tylenol.

Good thing I know how to cook, do laundry, etc., because for the next month or so I'll be doing everything around the house.:yesnod:

Good excuse to cut back on the drinking for awhile, too.:shots:

Hope she heals quickly. If I had a hubs that did all that I might take a few X~tra days to recoup. :D

Yeah man, it was really nice to flip through the posts and find that all worked out well for her! :hurray:

Now about the laundry... Don't go confusing the permanent press with the sheit that needs to go to the dry cleaners. :D

Thanks. Being retired casual dressers, we haven't been to the dry cleaners in years. And the wife hasn't been out of her pajamas since the surgery.:seasix:

Update. Things are going well, we saw the doctor a few days ago and everything is going even better than expected. Initially we were told no weight on the hip for 4-6 weeks. Doc says some weight is okay now, with progression from a walker to a cane one week from now.

Pain is very minimal. Incision is healed to the point where no bandage is needed and submersion (baths) are okay now. This was good news, my wife loves her bath tub. We went to the store today to shop for groceries and she was able to pretty much use the cart as a walker.

We'll be going out tomorrow night for our anniversary and her daughter is taking her to Reno for a planned mother/daughter trip in a few more weeks. This doesn't worry me since the daughter has a master's degree in clinical nursing, so I know she will be safe and in good hands.
