View Full Version : Skewl me on electric lawn mowers.

I have a tiny lawn. Maybe 300 square feet.
Until last week, it looked like the surface of the moon, nothing but dust and rocks (and tree roots). Therefore, it was low maintenance.

Now, I have fresh sod (fescue) that I'm watering every day, and eventually it's gonna need some mowin'.

I don't think my lawn is big enough to justify a big gas mower, so are any electric (esp. cordless) mowers worth a damn? I think even a smaller reel mower would be fine for my yard.

Here we go. I think I found the one.

Amazon.com: WORX WG783 Lil' Mo 14-Inch 24-Volt Cordless 3-In-1 Lawn Mower with Removable Battery: Patio, Lawn & Garden@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41hvAB6WOlL.@@AMEPARAM@@41hvAB6WOlL

It's small so it'll fit in the storage shed (which is also tiny) and the battery comes right out so I can charge it inside the house.

wow, the forum software does magical stuff with amazon links

Your yard is 20' x 15'? 7 yards by 5 yards? Use scissors.

Have you considered hiring whoever your neighbors are using....$20 bucks a month for a mowed weedeated & edged yard is a much better deal than $250 up front. Remember without an edger and weed eater it's going to still look ratty after a while, so a lawn crew may actually be your cheaper option.

20 bucks won't get you one cut a month here...although the OP's 300 sq ft lawn should be discounted.

With a small yard, it can work out pretty cheap, especially if the yard crew is already in the neighborhood. I think $20 a month is what Tony <C5silverbullet> pays.

20 a month = 5 bucks per cut... I got more than that 40 years ago.

not gonna happen here...not even if the crew cuts next door every week.

It's a pretty short drive from Virgina to Georgia, that could work.

From what I've read on the battery operated lowers the battery dosn't last long and you have to replace them every couple years. For that small of a yard I'd just get one with a cord and get a battery operated weed eater.

IMHO, drop the battery idea. Just use a corded electric. Cheaper, more reliable, will do a better job.

If you get behind on mowing because you are gone, had too much rain to mow, etc, etc the battery mower will not handle the taller grass.

Corded electric will not have any issues.

I hate cords but on a small lawn it would be OK.

Is the tree and tree roots still there? If so, it will be back to dirt by next summer. Trees suck up water big time. Your only hope is to water daily or every other day once the grass is established.

My lawn portion of the yard is 10'x50' or so. So 500 sq ft total (wow, math!). I use the cheapest corded-electric mower that Lowes had at the time. Have used it for a few years now without an issue. Didn't feel like messing with the gas ones.

When I lived in Silicon Valley, 20 bucks would get you a Viet Cong jumping off the back of a pickup truck and running around with a leaf blower for 3-5 minutes.

We have the Worx lawnmower which I bought for my wife about 4 years ago. We are still on the original battery. The trick is to run the battery down and the plug it in and leave it plugged in.
We have 74,000 sq feet of yard, she does all the tight spots I get the rest with the rider. She can mow for about 1 hour with the hoover before the battery dies down.
This is her third battery lawn mower and by far the best so far. She hates the gas ones.
Sears used to sell the Worx lawnmowers, not sure if they still do or not.

I know you have all been on the edge of your seats waiting for an update.

So, last week I got my cute little 14" Worx mower shipped from Amazon. I used it on Tuesday (battery arrived half-full) and again today. Works (worx) like a champ, but it feels more like vacuuming a rug than mowing the lawn. It's tiny.

I love the electric. Just yank out the battery after you're done, put it on the charger, then drop it in next time.

The new ones like this are easy to push, not like your grandfathers spinner, and they cut the grass better than a rotary.
Me, I'll stick with my lazy-fatcat tractor, ha! :D:D
