This is a 44,000 acre lake. Flooding is happening around the shoreline. We have a park in the city where I live that has a gazebo in the middle of it, several hundred feet from the water's edge. That gazebo is now surrounded by water. That's the third time I've seen that in the 28 years I have lived here. I'm a mile from the shoreline and elevated enough so we should be okay.

I just keep telling myself this beats being on fire.

Here's video of the park two years ago when the water was only six inches higher than now.

And rain is in the forecast almost every day for the next two weeks.

The good news is the drought is over. The bad news is all of this water will aid in brush growth so it can catch on fire again this summer and fall.

Actually there is a dam at the lower end of the lake that empties out into a large creek. It's the only outlet from the lake and in the summer it provides water for agriculture in a neighboring county. The dam has been wide open for several weeks but it is only capable of lowering the lake by one inch a day. We've had several storms in recent weeks that added one foot to the lake in 24 hours.

I learned when I saw my first flooding here in '97 that lake flooding lasts a lot longer than river flooding. These conditions will be here for weeks if not months, depending on future rainfall. In '97 the lake was about 18 inches higher than now. My mom's mobile home park right on the water had several feet of water in it. One thing good about a mobile home is you're three feet above the ground, so her place was okay but she had to come stay with us for s few weeks.

With my luck the volcano in the middle of the county will go off. Last time was 60,000 years ago.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Perhaps we will just break off into the ocean like everybody talks about...:Jeff '79:

What people are too stupid to realize is that an earthquake large enough to make California fall into the ocean would level every building west of the Mississippi river. And probably east of it, too.:shots:

The other little surprise most aren't aware of is the massive amount of snow sitting in the Sierras. Up to 50 feet deep in some areas. Some ski lifts are completely buried under snow. If we get an early warm spring and it melts fast enough it could flood virtually every river and overflow every reservoir in much of the state.

The wife and I were thinking of moving to Yuba City about ten years ago for a job offer she had. Houses were crazy cheap there and it was tempting but the Realtor told us if a levy breaks there would be six feet of water in the houses we were looking at. We passed.

That's the kind of thing that could happen if that snow melts too fast.

No, not at all. Getting tired of it raining, but no danger of flooding where we live. People getting flooded right now have been through it many times. They know it's the price you pay for living on the water's edge. Even the snow melt won't affect us. We are at an elevation of 1300 feet. It's the central valley that will have problems.

Funny thing is if you study the Indians who lived here for thousands of years before we showed up in the 1850s, they didn't live right on the shore. They knew better.

Two of my aunts and uncles lived in row houses in the Essex area. That's where my mom is from. I used to spend about six weeks back there every summer when I was a kid. Lots of good memories. I love watching House Hunters when they are looking at row houses in Baltimore or DC. It's pretty cool what some people have done to them.

Maybe they would have fought harder if they were trying to keep nice waterfront homes.

The Ohio river is high enough we are having a difficult time getting our ore and carbon supply up the river. Two of the locks are closed due to flooding. We might have to have it offloaded and put on a train to get to us. Not good for the cost.

The lake I live on, (actually a large flood control reservoir) has moved well over 15' a couple times since August of last year. Normally it starts going down around Memorial day, and the lake gets dangerously low around Labor day. Its dangerous unless you well know the lake and also use a dept finder as a save your ass item!

We had so much water input in the last 9 months or so that the controlling of the reservoir has been quite interesting to say the least. With the water moving up and down so much we have huge ice heaves that are extremely dangerous to snowmobiles. Also many docks, floats and stairs have been crushed and carried away. When the ice out occurs it appears they will be a shitload of debris heading to the dam! Then the snow melt and spring rains will bring the lake back up. I would think that based on what I see we will have water going over the dam, and that could make things very "interesting/nasty" for down river people and communities!

My private beach will also get a bunch of float in due to the current of the river & the prevailing wind moving things along. It appears this year will be nasty, glad I have a good tractor with bucket! My docks are pulled way up past the high water line and are safe!

I guess after the recent problems there they are getting ready for some major water to flow in as the snow pack melts. I have no doubt it will fill up nicely.
