View Full Version : After a busted Atlanta trip I found the new "toy" in NJ

Went to Atlanta to pick up a GTO but the seller grossly misrepresented the car. :issues:

After months of searching, the new family cruiser was only an hour away in NJ. Doctor was the original owner and still had the owners manual, build sheet and spare tire.

Numbers matching '67 GTO 400 BB 4 BBL 4 speed Hurst 3.55 Posi
Never any rust, all original panels inside and out
Engine and trans rebuilt 6k miles ago
You can eat off the undercarriage of this thing

New wheels/tires are being ordered tomorrow (18" X 8)
coilovers and Wilwood disc brakes in 2 weeks
East Coast Supercharging is working with me on an NA LSX beast to power her.

Beautiful car. I wouldn't change the wheels, but I've never been a fan of modern wheels on a classic muscle car. Those Cragars are perfect and period correct. The Wilwood brakes will be a nice update.
Either way, have fun and enjoy the car.:seasix:

:iagree: Those wheels should stay on the car. Liked the 65 thur 67 GTO'S and that on looks like a winner.:seasix::cert:

Congrats! Sweet ride!

Wish I had known and could have scoped out the Atl. car for you. I once made a trip to MN. for a '67 Corvette. Had two guys on CF tell me no rust! Plane tickets, U-Haul reserved, hotel room, rental car, etc....it was an expensive trip, but saved my ass by not taking their word about the rust to inspect it myself.

VERY nice Scott, congrats :toast:

I hope that LSX transplant is bolt in ONLY. I'd hate to see an original car like that hacked up.

I agree. Don't cut nuffin'! "Numbers" cars are increasingly rare and the next custodian will probably be ecstatic you kept all the OE bits.

The wheels you see were aftermarket. Doc had the originals (5" rally bologna skins) and I am definitely keeping them.

The 18" wheels are the same as the Cragars in the pic but larger and actually look great on the car.

The seller gave me intentionally altered pics that were strategically taken to hide the shitty bondo work; that he claims wasn't on the car.

I asked all the right questions and he just outright lied.

Shouldn't be any hacking and I'm saving the entire original power plant.

On the flip side, the collectors are getting old and dying off. Younger kids do not and will never care much about these classics, with a few exceptions.
That is why classic cars and many other vintage collectibles are dropping in value every year for the most part.
A few Mopars and the LeMans/GTO are the few US made exceptions. :sadangel:

So I will maintain the ability to go back to all original but I'm not under any misconceptions about values.

I am fairly sure she'll fetch more in her resto-mod state than reverting back to OEM.

Very good to hear. As the saying goes, they're only original once. A friend of mine from my HS days had a blue '67 GTO ( 400 auto ), Very nice car although he went with "super wide" tires in the back ( N50's ) with air shocks.

One advantage of the LSX will be power and fuel mileage. Original you get one or the other but not both

When you find traction is limited by fender clearance please resist that guy on your shoulder who is going to whisper "TUB IT, WHO CARES".

We were both wise enough to check them out in person. I can't tell you how many sellers have lied to me about condition.

Enjoy!

Nice car, Scott. I can also hear the dual exhaust from here. :D:seasix:

Also, I just watched the Car Fix, S7 E10, where they went with suspension, steering, upgraded wheels and tires, and big brakes for a '66 GTO. It turned out pretty nice.

Either way, have fun and enjoy the car.:seasix:I have to 2nd the Cragar wheel comment. Modern wheels just don't look right on a bone stock bodied 60's muscle car. Cragar's are the only exception IMHO! Bigger/wider Cragar's to replace those are totally acceptable!:D

How does one travel from PA all the way to the traffic hell that is Atlanta, find out the seller was full of shit, and resist beating the shit out of him???

Congrats on a great score! Beautiful car, great color, and the right options.

Nice to be able to restomod it and still go back to original if desired.

Will enjoy seeing pics of the progress.

Trying to find that one to watch. That is exactly the stuff I'm starting to research.
QA1 makes a nice suspension upgrade kit with coil-overs, sway bars, end links etc.
$3000-3500 depending on spring rate.

Should make a profound difference in handling.

I called out the seller and he tried to play off that it was his partner that gave the responses.
I called him over to show him the horrendously schlocky bondo work all over the bottom quarters and pointed out the holes in the hidden corners of the trunk near the pinch-welds.

Dumbazz just stared at me.... I had to walk out. No sense in debating with somebody like him.
Like the old saying, "if you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't, nothing else matters"

I am a fan of Detroit Speed suspension, and Wilwood brakes. If it were my car it probably would get a Mast Motorsport engine, but I cannot fault your logic.

I see the Detroit Speed stuff as well. I have some experience with QA1 but not DS.
Big concern is fitment/compatibility issues. I don't want to get stuck with extra fab work that will booger up existing brackets etc.
