I vote Enzo gets the exploder for free but he has to pay to fix the tranny...cheaper than a different shitbox and you know the laundry list of new parts on it.

I get requests all the time for "cheap" cars. I refuse to sell anything under $5k, and even that's usually pushing it.

You could take a look at Bartonfamilymotors.
bartonfamilymotors.com
https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/d/excellent-2006-toyota-camry/6671052855.html
Could be a scam, but they do list a local phone number, which is unusual if it is a scam.
https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/d/2005-ford-focus-ses/6671065739.html
Seems reasonable.....110,000 miles? Got some life left.

Price is right, and you were gonna rebuild a transmission anyway, right?

Last year I sold a pretty nice '08 Camry with 106K on it for $6,500. Single mom going to community college living with her family. Nice kid. She was driving a Jetta with 300K on it.

Which brings up another point. It wasn’t all that long ago and 50,000 miles was about all you’d want to put on a vehicle. Trade in value tanked above 50k.
And then there’s the rust issue. If you did drive it until it died usually body disintegrated.
These days 100,000 miles is common. 25 years ago you wouldn’t touch something with those miles.

Engineering tolerances and Metallurgy are much better now. Oil quality and hair products are better as well.

Sure. My kid should spend 1/3 of his savings. You are a financial genius. :seasix:
My son is paying his own way through college. He should not spend more than $3k on a first car which he will destroy anyway. I’m paying for minor suspension, brakes and a timing belt change on a 2010 Chrysler Sebring. He is paying for the car.
Part of me feels bad that I’m not buying a car for him but the part of me that is a good parent thinks it’s better that he buys it himself.
Picking it up tomorrow.
Then we start searching for another car for $8-10k
Cars are a waste of money. I could go finance one or even lease through the company but I just don’t want to spend money on cars. But I’m no financial genius. :D

I paid for my first and every car and I think it makes a person more responsible, my siblings had cars bought for them and well :leaving:. As for a $3K car, it will be a lot of work but could be a good way for your son to learn how to work on cars

I applaud you're sensibility.
Thank you for the compliment.:cert:
Another pro tip.
If you see a better car than the Sebring come up for a reasonable price, buy it and sell the Sebring.Keep trying to trade up for the least cost possible until your son has a reliable car that won't nickel & dime him.
Did you ever think of swallowing some Rector Seal for that pin hole ?
Bad joke. Get well man !!!

That’s a pretty good idea except that would take a huge amount of time that I could be billing at $250 an hour. I cannot imagine constantly looking for vehicles, checking them out, running carfaxes, talking to morons, people not showing up, etc.
Sebring will need a timing belt change in another 10k miles. Everything works fine right now. Sloppy ride but I’m used to a C5.
We will do the brakes when I heal enough. Probably end links too. Doesn’t really need anything else.
I’ve offered to pay for all that. With the exception of timing belt, we will do the rest DYI. This way he will learn.
What he doesn’t know is that I’ll be replacing the money for the car in his account without his knowledge as soon as things pick up at work.
Tomorrow he will wash the car, check tire pressure, go get new brake bulbs and change those out, check all the fluids, etc.
Oddly the car has a chrome #2 on the hood. :confused5: m guessing there was some emblem there that got cooched (slight damage there on hood) and some dipshit (or clever bastard) stuck a two in the hole.

I only paid $4k cash for the Vette I bought last month. 1985 with 78k miles. Traded it Saturday for a one owner 2008 F150 STX with 150k.
I have $2800 in my 2000 I30t with 101k miles.
And our 2001 QX4 so far has only cost me $2300
Yeah, they are all old, but I have less than $10k in all three. All low miles, rock solid dependable, and paid for. You boys don't know how to shop.

Dude you are one of the most clueless people on here. I literally don’t have time to shop for cars. You have ZERO idea what it means to be self employed.
There are 2080 hours work hours in a year.
About 50% of a self employed persons time is on unbillable activities.
That leaves 1040 hours per year that can be billed
Most small service businesses run at about 70% capacity
That leaves 624 billable hours in a year.
This would be for someone who doesn’t have serious illness that requires many doctors visits, labs, 5 hour chemo every six weeks, untold hours with insurance companies and unplanned hospitalizations. Add to that severe fatigue and you might get a clue about the size of the challenge.
My business costs about $195 an hour just to keep the lights on. (Doesn’t include profit)
Every single hour I spend looking for cars costs me a min. Of $195.
I have no personal time, no hobbies, no time for family or friends. I perform once a month. (Don’t forget I do all the promotion for that).
Right now I’m down to one client (the last round of death and surgery cost me dearly). Every hour I spend looking for a car is time I should be looking for another client or two or providing services to existing clients.
I’m desperately trying to get client load stabilized to the point where I can hire 2 people to take care of some of the work so I can focus on high end billable work and business development.
If I can’t make enough to buy insurance I will die.
You are giving advice that might be sound for someone else. But you could not be more off base in my case.
So, STFU. And thank God you are healthy and have means.
