Holy hell. No way could I do this. My already high respect for our guys in uniform just went up a few notches.

I used to work on the Glide Slope Indicator (the ball) That's what gave the pilots their deck reference.

About 25 years ago some institution did a study and found that night carrier landings were the most stressful job in the world.

I can easily believe that. Add 30+ foot swells and the pucker factor has to be close to a 10.

LOTS of memories over that trip, some almost 20 years ago, taking the scouts to Norfolk for a ship tour....
so we saw the Oklahoma City...fast attack sub...and I VERY clearly remember sliding down the hatch some 30' and landing in a lunch room, setting down and facing a sub outline with blacked out areas....and the Lt. there...as the scouts followed along behind.....I looked to my right, there was this Navy Blues dressed female enough to no matter WHAT she wore, all eyes followed....
ROCKET FOX......so I looked at her, asking if she worked on this boat, she says Yes Sir!...I paused and commented, isn't it a bit CLOSE??...
she grins and says her boat was the repair/support boat next door on the dock....she was temp help on OKC fixing towed sonar array....
that was a neat tour....the crap we type on today is maybe not so great by what was on board that sub.....20 years ago.....
neatest freeking color displays I EVER seen...clarity beyond NFL standards...but true, no 60" display....

One of my pilots hit the round-down on the Shangri-La and didn't make it. The nose of the plane split off and he cartwheeled down the deck. Really nice guy.

My crazy assed cousin was a carrier pilot for about 6 years. He said his first night landing earned him "The Order of the Wet Diaper" from pissing his flight suit.
He flies for Continental now... so I guess he's still pissing his pants occasionally!
