View Full Version : The Most Expensive Car Ever Sold

A 1963 Ferrari just sold for $70 million, believed to be the highest price ever paid for a car, according to sources.

The 1963 Ferrari GTO — one of only 36 that were made — was sold in a private deal, according to Marcel Massini, the world's top collectible Ferrari expert. Sources said the car was sold by a German collector to David MacNeil, the founder of WeatherTech, the maker of car floor mats.

Previously the highest price for a car was $52 million, paid for another 1963 Ferrari GTO in 2013.

Ferrari GTOs are considered the biggest trophies in the car-collecting world for their rarity, power, beauty and success on the race track. A 1962-63 GTO sold at auction in California in 2014 for $38 million.

The $70 million GTO that was purchased by MacNeil won the 1964 famed Tour de France race and came in fourth at Le Mans, Massini said. It's painted in silver and yellow and despite a winning record on the track was never crashed, unlike many other GTOs.

MacNeil didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. But he is already an avid Ferrari collector, with several multimillion-dollar cars, sources said. Owning a GTO will put him in the most elite club in car collecting — the "GTO Club" of billionaires and multimillionaires who own what many consider to be the greatest Ferrari ever made. The club includes Ralph Lauren, fashion mogul Lawrence Stroll, and Walmart heir Rob Walton.

Massini predicts that GTO prices will continue climbing, since the number of billionaire Ferrari collectors is growing but the number of top-quality GTO's remains constant — with very few willing sellers.

"We will see a GTO sell for $100 million in the next two to three years," he said. "I have little doubt."

There is NO car on the face of the planet "worth" that kind of money. I suppose you could use the argument that someone paid that, well, I stand by my original statement. When you are goofy rich, I suppose it is all relative, but for that kind of money, I could do a lot of other things besides look at a car in my garage that will never be driven.

Tax haven. I'm reading some folks are buying those type cars rather than pay taxes on the money. Meh, there are worse things to do with money than buy an ultra rare Ferrari or the like.

sadly, or thankfully (depending on how you view life), i've never had to ask Mrs. DAB "honey, we have a spare 70-100 million laying around, do you think we should buy a used car?"

:leaving:

now....if someone wants to put that burden on me, i can assure them that i would not buy a used car with such funds. a new one maybe, but not a used one. :slap:

i bet for $70M, Ferrari would build you a one off custom car to your exact specs. maybe even less than that (more money for gas and floor mats!)

Worth is a function of buyers's demand and seller's desire. Price is a function of demand.

I'm pissed I don't still own my Supra which last sold for $100,000 in Texas. Cars have become art.

Toyota self admits that the forth coming Supra will not be built to the standards of the MKIV. They have admitted that the boosted ability of tuners on the MKIV was a fluke related to Yoda trying to build a quality car. MKIV was over engineered. MK5 will not be. Tuners will be dissapointed. I'm still prepared to buy an MK5.

I've seen that car in person and it is spectacular. Really, they are all amazing. They're more than 50 years old and still every bit as stunning as the day they rolled off the line. Gorgeous automotive art. Absolutely gorgeous.

So true. Of course it is only worth what someone will pay, and as Data said, yes they have become art, but I think that part has always held true for certain automobiles. Maybe not being rich, I don't get it, but even if I was, I wouldn't buy the car, or the art work just because.

at some point, for a few people, you have more money than you know what to do with. but they are adverse to simply giving it away. they want to get something out of it.

a collection of homes, boats, clothes, nice food (you can only eat so much), other childhood dreams fulfilled. and to some, you have to show off to others, so you make sure they know about your stuff, and maybe your publicly announced charity (names on buildings is favorite). but very few go around handing out $100 bills (much less dimes) to everyone that crosses their paths. in their view, they fought hard to get their wealth, and they aren't going to let go of it easily.

nevertheless, some day, they will die, and someone else will get all their stuff, and then it's their problem.

Been a favorite of mine since I first saw a picture of one as a kid.

Of course, I wouldn't own one now even if I could afford it. My wife wouldn't like it because it only has two doors and no cup holders.:yesnod:
