TYLER, TX – The man accused of trying to run over a Tyler Police Officer is in jail Friday night.
Charles Baker, 31, is charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and evading arrest with a vehicle.
He's accused of driving toward Sergeant Eddie Sheffield. Sheffield was trying to talk to Baker about loud music coming from his car.
Officers say after they approached Baker's car, they asked him to cut the engine. Instead of complying, they say Baker put his car in reverse, running over a Police bike and hitting a parked car.
Officials say Baker then drove forward heading towards a second officer who was on his bike. Sgt. Sheffield jumped off his bike, and shot at Baker as he drove closer, they say.
Baker got away, but only for the night.
Police found Baker, early Friday morning, sleeping in his car.
Police arrested Baker and took him to the Police Station for questioning.
Baker was then taken to the Smith County Jail, where he faces several charges. Turns out Baker had a previous warrant for his arrest for assaulting a public servant, and resisting arrest back in June 2010.
He recently had a motion to revoke his probation.
"So, he knew at the time, officers contacted him that possibly a warrant was out for his arrest, or he knew he was wanted, and that's why we believe he was attempting to get away," says Don Martin of the Tyler Police Department.
Baker is now facing charges for aggravated assault against a public servant, and evading arrest with a vehicle.
His bond totals close to $800,000.
Police did find alcohol in the Baker's vehicle, but, it's unknown if he was intoxicated at the time.
Both officers involved in Thursday night's incident, are okay.
