We've owned some property in the sierras here in California (19 happy hollow ln) for 10+ years and we're finally going to start developing it so we took the weekend to meet with a brush removal company and have some fun while we were up there. This is my driveway...

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p275/meanz06/20180505_075550_zpsg44tscta.jpg

Its been left to overgrow all this time. The driveway that is graveled goes in a bit then up to the right.

Took care of the meeting and got the bid. next part of our trip was to go up higher in the mountains and do some shooting. It was a great time, nice and quiet except the crack of the weapons.

Time to come down out of the hills, cool. Having such a nice time in the mountains as I always do I decided to take the high/long road back. It's a county maintained dirt road is never an issue, cars can travel it easily.

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p275/meanz06/20180505_160507_zpsv04x1qzy.jpg

We were almost down the mountain then this happened. There's a spring near the road and made a mud "puddle"

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p275/meanz06/20180505_161622_zpsmqjh9hkj.jpg

So I had a 50/50 decision, left or right

I chose poorly :Jeff '79:

:iagree: The Goodyears suck in the mud! But they're decent at crawling over dry ground, good for pavement running (90% of their lives) and they last forever.

The truck is to heavy and has no business being in mud or put mud tires on it, those don't last long on the street and that's most of my trucks use, it's my commuter vehicle

Would you (eventually) build close to that foundation? Could you save it and use it for a man cave / shop / garage if you put a structure on it? Is the foundation solid???

The brush company bid on taking it out but his excavator but it was no match for it. He barely could chip it much less crack it. After 30 mins we removed that part of the bid. It is solid... :yesnod:

The foundation is on the prime part of the clearing. Our options I see are, filling it then concrete it and back filling the perimeter and utilizing it as a pad for the 5th wheel OR getting heavy equipment up there to rip it out.

:iagree: But My pennywise wife thinks otherwise, same with other opinions to keep it. I just don't want anther big expense to rip it out later if I do want something different. But, there's also the idea of utilizing it as it is when that time comes. My thoughts are, rip it out, utilize the 5th wheel for a few years then start fresh with our/my plan...

It will probably cost $10K to rip it out and haul it off, and 15K to replace it with new if the time comes. I would take the 0K route, trim the rebars flush and leave it there for now. Perhaps fill it with gravel as a pad or patio for the nonce?

Agreed, cut off the rebar and leave it. If it is not where you want to build eventually, use the spoils from your build site to cover it up and forget about it.

I would do that. open one end for a garage entrance, if you don't want the expense of concrete, you could put slag down.

Looks to me like you could make half of it an apartment or a shop/mancave.

Census from family and friends now that they can see it opened up is keep it but i'm still leaning toward ripping it out. The foundation is just so determined. What if i want to put a prefab there? I kinda see the advantage of keeping it but it limits the future plans, that I clearly don't have yet..

You don't have to feed it or water it so it will cost nothing to leave it for now.
Unless it is directly in the way of placing your RV why make the decision today when you are unsure about the future for that exact place? Work around it for now, firm up your plans and move forward when you really know the final use for that spot. There will still be excavators with breakers on the arm (think jackhammer on a stick) for the forseeable future, along with dump trucks to haul off the rubble.

For comparison sake, it took all day for these three machines to get these missile silos down to grade.
You'd be wise to bury the foundation to grade and foogeddabouddit.
It's always there if you decide that you need it.

Yeah, I get it and that's most likely what is going to happen. I didn't mean to sound urgent to get it done but I will say I want the RV up there and ready before Thanksgiving this year. I've been going to this area since the early 70's when my Grandparents purchased property there and we always went there for Thanksgiving and vacations. Last years Thanksgiving I committed to having Thanksgiving there with my family. I want to continue that tradition for my kids and grandkids

Get a small bulldozer and just have someone push dirt over the top.
Maybe have the crown showing.
Stone the interior with crusher run and park your trailer on it.
That is the most cost effective solution that I can think of.

The skidsteer in Jeff's pics has a breaker on the front. If you decide to demo the foundation call a demolition contractor who will have the tools and knowledge to remove the concrete quickly and safely.

It gets cold there in the winter, maybe a dusting of snow at this level (3,500'). 20min ride up the hill and you'll be stopped from the snow. It's a welcomed though because it gets hot as Africa up there in the summer. :cert:

I've previously posted we've owned the place for over a decade but only started developing it a couple months ago so we're still in the infancy of getting it cleaned up. We took our RV up there a couple weeks ago were it will stay until we get something permanent in place (couple of years away from that).

It only took a couple visits to the place/RV to figure out that water and septic are paramount to sustainability. Water had to be first, working on an empty dirt lot requires a shower and driving to the lake to bathe is less than desirable.

Next thing was to figure out the septic. Moving the 5th wheel up and down the mountain roads to a pump station was again, less than desirable. Initially We used a port-o-potty to keep from filling the tank but that required a ride to the lake out empty it, only 2miles but still inconvenient. Currently using a couple of external holding tanks that we can go for a long weekend without having to go to the lake to empty. I ordered a RV macererator pump last night so we can pump to the septic tank on the property so I'm hoping that will be the fix to that

Oh, and last but not the least! After we got the RV up there we started cleaning up after the mastication process we had done and I may be hispanic but my middle name is not Manuel. Humping debris by wheelbarrow sucks balls! Sooo,
I bought a tractor :seasix:
