View Full Version : Question for Oddball
Do you actually live in Winston Salem? The reason I ask is that my wife and I are interested in a piece of property there for the future plan of building and moving in a few years. Just going by the listing, and google maps, the area looks pretty nice and is close enough to shopping to keep my wife happy, and far enough from the city to keep me happy. Also, at 5.4 acres, it's big enough to keep neighbors at bay! I would appreciate any thoughts on the area if you know it. Or maybe swing by and have a look at it for me. I hope it's OK to ask! :cert:

That address appears to sit right in the middle of an ancient Indian burial ground.

That area is not too bad, but it's on the border of what is. It's a mile from the end of the runway, so there's that as well. South and and West to the highway (52) really suck. Low rent housing and projects in those directions. North and East are better and get better as you head away from town.
Take a look at the crime maps.
Go a few miles east to the Kernersville area, and it's really nice.
Or go West of highway 150 which runs north and south through the center of town. Lewisville and Clemmons are great. I'd shy away from most area's on the East side. And stay the hell away from anything in the South-East side.
Most areas all around Winston that are outside the city limits are nice.
Rule of thumb; stay East of Salem Lake, West of 150, South of West Clemmonsville Rd., and North of Shattalon Dr. and Oak Summit Rd.
There are area's inside that, that are Ok and some that are really nice, but that should give you a rough guideline.

I think I might have found something else in Lewisville that fits all of my requirements too. Not as much land, but enough to keep me happy. Whatcha think of this one?

Edit:
Hmmm...on second thought, that property seems to slope a bit from the street. Not sure how much work it would take to build on it. :confused5:

My youngest knows how to shoot. She's working on her stance, but she's not afraid of my .357! My oldest doesn't give a shit about guns, though.

I can swing by there and look at it for you this weekend. That's only a couple miles from my house. That whole area out there is nice. In fact, I keep Julie here (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Lewisville,+NC/@36.0840124,-80.4299782,229m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x8853b6df06124b43:0x29a88832a5d6cee8!8m2!3d36.0970819!4d-80.4192216) over the winter or when I don't have her at my dad's or my place. The Lewisville pasture is about a mile from me.
If you want lower taxes, go just a few miles further west across the river into Yadkin County. Here is my place (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Lewisville,+NC/@36.1996461,-80.5900994,228m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x8853b6df06124b43:0x29a88832a5d6cee8!8m2!3d36.0970819!4d-80.4192216) in Yadkin county

Wow, that would be awesome! I know these places all look good, but having someone actually check on it really helps. In fact, we had our eye on a piece in Cedar Grove that was a lot closer to my daughter in Durham that looked really nice, and my wife was down there this weekend for a visit. They took a ride over to look at it and wasn't impressed. So the search continues. Knowing that there is someone in the area that can take a look for me is really cool. I appreciate it greatly, and if I get to meet you down there the drinks are on me! :cert:
BTW, nice to see you are living on Easy Street!

Oughta be pretty cheap, I already brought down the property value in the hood.
I did find one in Yadkinville that looks promising as well. According to google maps, it is located at 3013 Lori Ln. Whatcha think of this one?

I'll take a look. That whole are is nice. You might be banging on all cylinders with that one. It's close to everything and still in the country.
I take the Speer Bridge exit almost every day. One way to go to my dad's in Courtney, the other to my place up in the Forbush area.

The area is sort of historic too. Daniel Boon's in-laws owned half the county at one point.
There is an old colonial battlefield nearby. (more like an all day skirmish) Shallow ford is where all the west-bound traffic had to cross to get to points west and south west.
I'm getting excited! :D

Drove down Lori street yesterday afternoon. It looks like what you see on google street view.
You could have a house on every lot there, and still have a buffer of trees between them.
The area has always been nice and quiet. I'd have no problem living there. If you want more elbow room, look north or
south. Land prices tend to drop too as you get further from the main roads.

Thank you :seasix: I would love to live more out in the country, but my wife would not. This looked like a good compromise to me. Also, how is the asking price for the Lori Ln. piece? Is that in line with the area? I am looking at flights now for possibly coming to look at these properties in the next week or so.
If you get a chance, could you take a peek at the Lewisville piece?
Know any good builders? :D

Price is about average. They are wanting close to the same at the Lewisville lot, but you'll pay twice the tax in Lewisville. You may want to consider the lot up on Butner Mill road, too. That road is absolutely beautiful. Especially down by the mill. That part of the road is still a gravel road, but the rest of the road is paved. You wouldn't have to worry about the gravel part if you were going to town though. You'd just take Flint Hill up to 67 and then it's a straight shot into Winston. Also, right there on 67, about a half mile from the river is K&S Building Material Salvage. It's every Do-it-your-selfer's toy store for all sorts of neat shit.
Don't know any builders, check the BBB.
Hmmm... I hadn't seen the Butner Mill road piece. That one looks like a winner! It is now added to my list. That makes three. Thanks for the tip. :seasix:
