View Full Version : After a While...

by Veronica Shoftsall:
After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning and company doesn't mean security.
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises.
And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes ahead, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child.
And you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans, and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. ..
After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to leave you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure;
You really are strong, you really do have worth.
And you learn, and you learn
With every goodbye you learn.

Amen brother. The one thing I do enjoy with being older is the wisdom that comes with it. Nobody can teach it to you, I tried to learn it when I was young. Nothing can substitute for life experience and having a few failures along the way.

Where were you fukkers when I was 18? :D
I'd like to say I woulda written down every letter with absolute purpose. But at 18, we all know everything about everything, right?
Life dgaf about your plans or what you think is fair or right. I'll take a guess here and say we've all learned some damn hard lessons.

That would be Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne who are left. One is an over-rated mumbling singer, the other is an under-rated musician who has never made it into the Hall of Fame.

Damn Spence. I see there are two of us who think the bolded. I never have been able to listen to that fukk Dylan sing. I've heard cats in heat sound better. And Jeff Lynne, I suppose, just looks at his fat bank account and sleeps well at night.

I'd guess I was about to start middle school or so.
When I was in my early 20s I had an old fella I used to talk to at the bus stop.
I'll never forget the day he told me, "son, life is what happens while you're busy making other plans".

I've never talked about it here, but I always thought I was the only one who had to ride the bus back in the day. :cert:

Due to "life happening" I was homeless back when I was 30. Had to get out of the apartment I was splitting with someone who was an asshole.
Life had already handed me a few shit sammiches just before that which were totally beyond my control.
3 years later I bought my first home and 2 years after that, my first Vette.
Never looked back.

Thank you for being candid.
I was cocky at 18 and graduating high school. Today, at 55, not so much. I've been humbled a few times.

I was raised that "the man brings home the bacon, it's shameful to live off a woman". And that's the way I've lived my life.
Now, at 56; I'd marry a sugar momma in a heartbeat.

My problem was I didn't believe in myself. Hence, I was a janitor in a grocery store at 38. At 39, one of my best friends convinced me to come work at a Ford dealership he had just bought. His only stipulation was I had to start fresh and not limit myself on learning the car business. Fast forward six months, and I was running the joint.....

I still have recurrent concussive symptoms.
Last one was a couple of weeks back. Felt exactly the same as I did right when it happened.
One before that was about 9 months ago.
Short term memory was messed up pretty good at the time of the accident but it's getting quite a bit better.

"With every goodbye you learn"
I hope I never forget this line. The truest thing I've ever read.
It applies to school/graduation
It applies to jobs/co-workers
It applies to lost friends
Lost loves
Loss of loved ones, lost pets, lost youth...on and on.
Scott, I never would have guessed. You wear it well my man. You seem pretty upbeat and positive to me. I envy that. Shit sammiches have made me cynical and bitter at times. I'm about 50/50 but working on it every day.
