Just chatting with tech support. THANKFULLY under warranty.

I use this thing literally once every two weeks to fill out my work timesheet and email PDF's to my boss. It's a completely sterile machine, I don't use it for ANYTHING but those menial work tasks.

Tried firing it up to email my boss a PDF of Hobbs numbers for the airplane. Got the "7 Beeps of Death" - which apparently indicates CPU failure.

Customer Service in India confirmed Motherboard Replacement Necessary.

8. Months. Old.

Don't have these problems with my MAC's. Just Sayin.

Is that a home or a business model?

I have three OptiPlex's which were refurbs and they have given me great use for years. I did need to replace a power unit in my Optiplex 760 a few months ago.

It's a home model. I bought it at Staples, and it was the cheapest computer they had in the store. I didn't care as I only needed it for very limited work tasks...still shouldn't die in less than a year of extremely light usage.

I bought my iMac in 2008, and outside of a memory upgrade, this thing chugs along perfectly. Completely stable, and 10 years old.

My Macbook Pro I bought used, and it's the most wonderful computer I have ever owned. Everything about it is just fantastic. I baby that thing.

Mac's ARE WORTH THE MONEY.

I check with my friend Barry when it's computer time for me. I get refurbed business machines. They are usually two years and were top of the line at the time so they are fine for my use.

Maybe a dumb question, but why can't you perform those tasks on one of your Macs? :bigears: If you need to run Winblows for those tasks, you could run it in a virtual machine.

Look up Parallels, VMWare Fusion, and Oracle VirtualBox (free). All of these products will allow you to install Windows as a virtual machine on your MacBookPro.

If you buy a Dell, buy from the business model.

:iagree:

I've carried around only Dell and HP laptops and they've all been pretty reliable considering it's anything but light duty.

Dude you're getting a broken Dell! :D lol.

Seriously, I had similar happen with a lenovo I purchased ~4 years ago, crapped out 10 months in, motherboard failure. Lenovo was great to deal with, sent me custom packaging and a prepaid label and had it back to me in about a week

So 1 el cheapo pc motherboard goes belly up and all PCs are inferior to macs?

Here, I've got an 8 year old Thinkpad T61 that's running win10 pro like a champ, that now balances out your el cheapo dell issue and all is right in the world again.

Maybe it is a Staples problem.

We bought an HP laptop last month. Within 3 weeks, the cooling fan starts making horrendous noise. Official word from support: It's FUBAR.

it's a "buying low end laptop" problem.
