View Full Version : Prayers for my sweet Hanna

Hanna has not been feeling well for a few days. She has been super needy (for example coming up to the office just to hang out. Usually she wants something). Or acting like a frail baby. Instead of the ass kicking drill seargent she normally is.
She is licking her nose a lot which tells me she is nauseated. Today she started losing her balance in the rear, sort of like limping but weirder.
Could be vestibular Disease a type of inner ear problem that clears up on its own. Blood work today was fine. Checking for tick borne disease tomorrow.
This morning she greeted me in her usual style, jumping up on the couch, getting some petting and then leaping over the back of the couch to escape.
She is 8 years old. She is the all black beauty and the sweetest most loving dog we’ve ever had. She brings baby animals in from the woods like she’s their mama, carrying them in her powerful jaws without a scratch. (Possum last week).
We spend every night together in bed nuzzling and just holding each other. She loops her front leg around my neck. I pet her ears and tummy.
Pray it’s just vestibular. I can’t lose her yet. Even Shadow knows somethings up. He continually checks on her, even giving her light kisses on the nose (and this dog never licks). He sits looking at her and whines. Then he shoves his nose up her butt. (Not sure that’s a sign of concern. Just the usual dog butt drilling)
We gave her some anti nausea medication and she is stoned Blue. I had to carry her out to go potty. She weighs about 85. Now she is on the bed with me. She will sleep right next to me all night so I can keep an eye on her.
Prayers please. She is worth it. She brings a feminine touch to the pack. When she’s gone my heart will be broken again and I’ll probably get another military dog from Germany. They only bring back dead stuff. Like an elk. Or a Nazi.

I’ve lost so many GSDs that starts with these kinds of symptoms. I’m hoping it’s just something minor. Poor thing took anti nausea meds and was unable to walk. I carried her our side to go potty. :sadangel:

Pete, how is Hanna today?
Well, she was having a reaction to the anti nausea medicine. She was stoned out of gourd. :sadangel:
Today she seems better but not drinking and having trouble walking. I gave her broth mixed with water and she sucked it down.
There is a good chance it’s case of vestibular Disease. Hoping it passes in a few days. Vet agrees.
One thing I found out. She is too heavy to carry. She is resting comfortably now.
I’ll keep you posted. The prayers are working. :seasix:
We’re all hoping for a full recovery.

Have you been using anything with eucalyptus like a room defuser? I've read where eucalyptus is toxic to pets, making them have similar symptoms.

Standby. She is a beauty.

She has carried me more times than I can count. She is the first female Shepherd I’ve owned. She is very maternal and empathetic. Hard to explain. Super gentle but fierce at the same time.

I've sort of been waiting to reply. I hope your dog makes a full recovery. They carry us emotionally probably more than most would admit. Best wishes for her and you!:seasix:

Slowly getting better. She woke me up this morning with cold nose to my face which is usually every morning. She hasn't done that in days. Other signs that she is feeling better is showing some life - wagging her tail, up and around, playing with the ball (but not for long - she gets tired still).
Her hind legs seem a bit more stable - she's not staggering but I can still see some weakness back there. I lost Django to Degenerative Myopothy (sp?) He slowly lost control of his hindquarters over the course of several months.
Very sad. He weighed 112 lbs and would drag himself with his front legs to attempt to participate in the family but the last few weeks, he gave up and just whimpered in the corner. I couldn't care him to go outside so once he was immobile it was time.
I guess that's my fear. It's a gradual disease for which there is no cure - it starts with dragging hind legs and within 3-4 months they are incapacitated. Poor Django would drag his feet at first until he wore the skin off the top of his feet. We used little boots they make for search and rescue dogs which helped but he wore through those too.
Here's a photo of my son and Django towards the end - must have been a month or so before he left us since he was able to sit up for the shoot. Note the size of that dog...

And my favorite shot Django. I know I've posted it before but humor me. He was a powerful boy!
Glad to hear that Hanna is getting better!
And we won’t get tired of you posting pics of your dogs.:thumbs:
