U.S. Reps. John Lewis (D. MS) and Bennie Thompson (D. MS) will stay away from Saturday’s opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, citing the attendance of President Donald Trump.

Lewis and Thompson had planned to attend Saturday. In a joint statement, they said that "Trump’s attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum...."

Gov. Phil Bryant invited Trump to attend Saturday's openings of the Civil Rights Museum and the History of Mississippi Museum as part of Mississippi's 200th birthday.

On Thursday, former Democrat Mississippi Gov. Ray Mabus announced he won’t be attending the museum opening.

Mississippi’s civil rights museum is the nation’s first such state-sponsored civil rights museum. The state spent $90 million on both museums, and another $19 million was privately raised for exhibits and endowments. Liberals are claiming that they will not bow down to this Republican use of power.

U.S. Rep. John Lewis will not attend civil rights museum opening (http://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2017/12/07/john-lewis-trump-museum-mississippi/931013001/)

Now wait a dag-nabbed minute! Republicans appropriated $90M to build the museums, but you resent our attending the openings? And how in Hell are Republicans asking you to "bow down" in any way? Fake, fake fake....

U.S. Reps. John Lewis (D. MS)

Fake news is right, John Lewis represents the 5th congressional district in Georgia, not Mississippi.

And I wouldn't exactly call his fighting racism fake either. He's been in the movement trying to fight racism since the early 60's, had his skull fractured in the Selma AL. march & has had the crap beat out of him several times.

John Lewis is a brother from another mother to John McCain. Both have spent a lifetime capitalizing on trauma they suffered as young people. They both can't go away soon enough. And if Lewis doesn't want to attend? Great, he just saved the taxpayers from spending money on his travel costs. Boycott more stuff, John!

I really wouldn't go that far. He had his head caved in several different times. To keep going back fighting for equal rights knowing you'll likely get beaten down again seems to show his determination. He's been fighting the same fight for well over 50 years.

And he generally doesn't get caught up in the crap that Al Sharpton & Jessie Jackson do.

John McCain spent time in a POW camp in Vietnam & has milked that for decades of sympathy. I don't see being a former POW & fighting for equal rights among skin color anywhere near the same.
