second gear in my Suburban?

Suburban is at the garage right now getting the transmission pulled out.

If it's just second gear in the 4L80E, those parts can be replaced for about $400.

If the transmission is burnt/done/ kaput, then it's this for $1600 shipped
4L80E Transmission 4WD, 4L80E 4x4, 4L80-E, 4L80, Heavy Duty 4L80E, Rebuild 4L80E, Monster 4L80E Transmission, 4L80E Free Shipping (http://www.monstertransmission.com/4L80E-Transmission-Heavy-Duty-4WD-4x4_p_5080.html)

Labor for either option is $680

Ouch!.....A long time ago they recommended using the drive 1 (3rd) around the city and the drive 2 on the highway. I wonder if that's still recommended?
Do you do mostly city or highway driving?
Was the trans fluid changed on a regular basis? :bigears:

Transmission fluid was changed every 75K. Driving is up and down hills in a mostly rural setting.

It's a 2001 so it has the button to press on the shifter for tow mode. It is acceptable to tow in OD as the computer alters the shift pattern.

Damn.... hope it's just a gear swap or valve body issue.

I'll let you know tomorrow.

At least this didn't happen in the middle of a snow storm

I've had two transmissions rebuilt in the past two years. My wallet feels your pain. :ack:

Found it. Probably needs a little WD-40 though.

I hear that. Mixed reports on what this Winter has in store for us.
I hear all agree on one thing; fookin' cold.

Either way no more than about $2300, or 3 payments on a new one :D

Well that'll teach ya to do neutral drop burnouts.

Come on man...just pull a gear out of one of those old engines you've got. Probably work better anyway.

Sure, I'll just pull a gear out of the Olds and then spend thousands of dollars and who knows how long finding another one.

My mechanic found the problem. It looks like when the transmission was assembled at the factory, the snap ring in on the splined shaft was installed incorrectly. :bslap: Instead of putting the split against the "tall" spline, it was in the open area and that caused it to fail.

Matt has the necessary parts ordered along with some upgraded parts. The rest of the transmission looked great so we decided to only fix what's broken.

Parts, labor, fluids plus incidentals will end up about $1500 out the door.

Hate hearing of all that crap, I managed to rebuild a 200 4r for my vette, about 12 years ago or so.....and it's been fine....my issue with newer vehicles is the excessive use of electronics.....

much less just why an 8 speed auto trans.....

4L80E is a three speed auto with overdrive. Yes it does have some computer nannies but had worked well for 219K so far.

Here's the run down from Matt ( my mechanic )

So we're replacing the intermediate clutches and steels, intermediate drum piston seals, valve body and pump gaskets, front seal, reverse boost valve assembly (sonnax item), boost seals (sonnax) item, 1-2 shift solenoid (had a code in the system for this), filter, and fluid. That's pretty much the rundown.

All for the sake of a snap ring. Any chance of the factory paying for it, or just not worth the hassle?

It's an 2001 Suburban with 219K on it. They would just laugh at me :yesnod:
