NEW JERSEY (FOX 5 NEWS) - A video that has gone viral on social media platforms apparently captured a teacher telling a student to stop speaking Spanish. The video was reportedly taken inside a classroom at Cliffside Park High School in New Jersey.

"Men and women are fighting. They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish," the teacher can be heard saying. "They're fighting for your right to speak American."

"You're being racist," a student replies. "I know how to speak English."

"American," of course, is not a language.

The teacher was reportedly speaking to a 17-year-old girl who moved to the United States nine years ago and speaks English and Spanish. She has spoken out saying she wants a public apology.

The 26-second video was posted to Snapchat and then shared many times. The exchange reportedly happened Thursday, October 12.

Fox 5 has not yet received comments from either the high school or the school district.

Some students told Fox 5 that the principal spoke about the incident during an assembly on Friday.

I got a dollar that says the girl was speaking spanish to either talk about the teacher or just to piss the teacher off.

Teenagers like to push buttons and at 17, they aren't fully responsible ( legally ) for their actions.

I must have missed it too.

I was listening to an Ozzy song yesterday and I am still amazed how when he sings you can understand every word. When he talks it's like a totally different language:leaving:

I always tell British people when I meet them that you can tell we won the revolutionary war, because if we hadn't, we'd all be speaking English now.

That was the first computer I ever used. We had one where I worked, we used it to estimate printing jobs. The hard drive was a cassette tape. It actually worked pretty well for what we used it for. It was smart enough to play backgammon. That was in '82, I believe. After I left that job I didn't have any interest in computers until about '98 or '99 when we got a computer for the house.

Truth is, your emoticon couldn't have come from one. They didn't have color.:D

It was a gradual change, but it definitely did.

That's OK. The English will be speaking Arabic soon enough.
