I am about 70 miles from the Santa Rosa fire here. I woke up this morning and found out about it then. We also have some smaller local fires here. Nothing threatening right where I live, except air quality. My wife is at the hospital here right now. She was called in as a volunteer to help out in the ICU. I worked my usual volunteer shift there this morning.
Two large hospitals in the area of the fire were evacuated in the middle of the night. I heard nurses transported patients in their own cars in some cases. Some of the employees in our hospital live in that area and could not get to work, so we were short handed, that's why they called my wife in to help out.
One of the hospitals that was evacuated belongs to our hospital group, so the whole chain of hospitals is on emergency alert. I never realized how inter-dependent a chain of hospitals are, both electronically and personnel wise, so, it's affected all of them.
I'm signed up for another shift in the surgery center tomorrow, we'll see how it's going then. I suspect some will be cancelled because they are elective surgeries. All but one of our anesthesiologists but one. come from the Santa Rosa area to work up here one or two days a week.
So many fires were started in the area last night, I have to wonder if we have another arsonist running around. If they catch him in my county, among the charges will be resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. The face in his mug shot will look like hamburger. You know what I mean.:yesnod:

Media sources are reporting a 200-acre wildfire, called the McCourtney Fire, that is burning near Orion Wy and McCourtney Rd. At least two structures have been damaged. Evacuations have been issued for: Polaris Dr, Orion Way, Allison Ditch Rd, Auburn Rd, Paddock Ln, and Thoroughbred Loop. Additional evacuations have been issued for the area north of Rough and Ready Hwy, between Cook Rd and Bonanza Wy, stopping at Bosa Dr and Britney Spr... More

My wife's cousin, who was in town with his wife and kids two weeks ago for the Bills game that we went to, have been evacuated,
They're somewhere in the Sonoma area, I'm not sure exactly where, but jeez! That sucks to have to worry about if you're gonna have a house to go back to.
We're hoping for the best for him.
I guess Buffalo isn't that bad after all after seeing all of the fun the rest of the country goes through on a regular basis.
At least the snow goes away after a while and you are left with what you had before it fell.

The larger danger for them is if they live in Santa Rosa, they live in the same county as Knooger.:yesnod:

When we evacuated it was at 7:00 am on a Sunday. We had about five minutes to grab what we could and leave. I wanted to leave, only three two lane roads out of my area or we were trapped. For all I knew one or more were closed.
If your relatives evacuated anywhere near this quickly, tell them to take stock of what they took and what they left behind. It tells you a lot about what's important in your life. For instance, I grabbed dog food and left about 10K worth or heirloom jewelry behind. Knowing what was important made downsizing easy. I took nothing from my garage that day. I even left a car behind even though we had two drivers. It was more important to have my wife with me in the car so I knew she was safe than to drive another car I was selling anyway. I think you see what I mean.
Have this conversation with them. It expanded my horizons thinking of all this. It's a day I will never forget.

A friend's daughter evacuated from Rohnert Park, south of Santa Rosa, yesterday. She goes to Sonoma State.

That really sucks.
The fire was 1/2 mile away, but the sustained gas build-up inside his house ignited. :sadangel:
All kidding aside, that really sucks for him.

Yes, I read that, too. He did say his family was all safe and they are well insured. I understand his wife is a doctor, so this could be a busy time for her. Two or three large hospitals in Santa Rosa were evacuated, so it's having an impact on other hospitals in the area.

What really sucks is even if you have the insurance and the means to rebuild, your formerly beautiful wooded neighborhood with spectacular views is a moonscape filled with with burned trees. The smell, which can take weeks to subside is also something you never forget.

As it stood yesterday evening, the fire closest to me is still ~3 air miles away (6 miles driving) with two roads, a freeway and a creek between the fire and the house. Nobody has asked us to evacuate or mentioned it as a possibility - as of last night it was 80 acres which is a lot of ground but not in wildfire terms.
The other two fires are further out but worse. One was 900 acres at last count and burnt 30-40 structures. That was / is about 15 minutes drive, probably 7 miles as the crow flies. Another was down in a sparsely populated valley, the Oregon House fire, which has already burnt 8200 acres. For reference, a square of 1 mile by 1 mile is 640 acres, known as a Section.
This is all last night's updates, no idea what happened overnight that hasn't made it to the local news service yet.
Nobody has any reason to think we might be in trouble over here any time soon.
Thanks for checking in at, ahem, 530 :)

Up north here we call them Diablo winds. They are expecting a 180 shift in wind direction later today. This is pretty much the worst possible scenario. At the very least it means smoke blowing towards our area, which is already bad. I'm going to the store to buy a heap filter for our HVAC system so I can filter the air in the house. Also buying masks so we can breathe a little better outside if we have to go out. My wife has asthma and she will be pretty much housebound until this is over.

They can be quite fashionable. :yesnod:
Grab a coat like this at K-mart and a super panda mask at Granger, and you're good to go.
Make sure you're packin' though. :funnier:

 The local air advisory I read after I posted that actually recommended not to use the masks unless absolutely necessary because they still won't filter out all the harmful particles and they make breathing harder because of the restriction, so I passed on that.
The aisle at the store where the HVAC filters were had more than a few people in it. I usually pay a couple bucks for a filter but the one I bought today is certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation and I paid $23 for it.:yesnod: It has a 1500 microparticle performance rating.

At least most of the grapes had already been harvested for this year. But, part of the problem is that the harvested vines are now dry and brown. They are actually fueling the fires in some areas whereas green vines actually make a pretty good fire break. I'm convinced the new vineyards that were between us and the fire a few years ago saved my neighborhood.
Market wise, there's been a glut of grapes in recent years, so a few vineyards being lost will be good for the growers who don't lose theirs.
The bigger economic factor, I think, is the marijuana that is being destroyed. Trust me, tons and tons of pot is grown in this area. You didn't think all that pot they are selling in Colorado is grown there did you?

Washington wine is better and wayyy less expensive. There are more 9 and above wines from Washington that are 1/4 the price of Napa and Sonoma, it's not funny. It is terrible that they are ruined though. Years of hard work down the drain.
Pot ? That's another story... :yesnod:

I don't drink much wine, but there are good wines all over the place. And living here, I can find excellent wine at very good prices. As I heard a wine critic say one time on a radio talk show in Sonoma, there is no such thing on this planet as a bottle of wine that cost more than about ten bucks to produce. All the rest of the retail price is markup, taxes, supply and demand, fancy labels, etc. Napa is selling a name. I live one county to the north in Lake County and our wines have won more awards per acre of grapes planted than Napa. Lots of good wine here for less than $20.
As a printer I printed labels for small batches of high end wine that cost $1-2 each. And the wine didn't taste any better after they put the label on the bottle.
