View Full Version : Said goodbye to our little calico today...

18 years old. She's been in the beginning stages of kidney disease for a few years now, which vet said was expected for her age. Arthritis in hips that we've been managing for the last year (limited options due to her kidney disease).

Came home from work on Friday. She attempted to stand up on her blanket and greet me, but couldn't quite do it. She let out a meow that was not a normal sounding meow for her. So, I knew something was wrong.

Observed her for about an hour after work and decided she needed to be checked out. Took her to the ER vet. She was crashing. We were optimistic that we may be able to reverse it. She was down to 3 lbs. They gave her subcutaneous fluids and some meds and we brought her home. We had been hand feeding her and giving her food and water via syringe since.

Unfortunately, she was getting progressively worse and we just couldn't watch her suffer. So, we made an appointment this morning and took her in, where they put her down peacefully. The entire way to the vet - and as she sat on the exam room table - she never cried once.

We were able to be there when she passed, so she was surrounded by familiar faces as they have her the first sedation shot.

Her name was Fatso because (when she was a kitten) she was as wide as she was long. She was a fat, little puff ball. We took her in as a stray when I still lived in Michigan and she came with us to Arizona and California. She and caitlin basically grew up together. She was my companion pretty much every day.

She was with us for 18 loving years and we will miss her.

Looks a lot like our oldest cat
Sashi is almost 17 and seeming in good shape for her age but I'm not sure about the trauma of us moving from Illinois to Florida in two weeks

So sorry for your loss Sandi. It's really tough when we lose a family member :sadangel:

Sorry to hear that, :sadangel: nice fuzzy ball.....the pix with 3 on the bed, two of them look like my cat Bo......same fat tummy and all......the tan one is odd man out from all the recent cats......but your buddy there looks just like/damn close to the one female out of the bunch we rescued from that attic, so the fuzz lives on.....

:cert:

I hit the post button, and look down at my shoes, and there is BO, sound asleep.....nose in my shoe......

Sorry to hear of your loss. A pet is a loving member of the family, and it is so painful to lose them.

I'm very sorry to hear that Sandy. My condolences to you and Robert.

I probably met that cat when I was over at your house years ago. :sadangel:

I hate these stories.

So sorry you had to do that. That grey tabby looks just like my Oscar, who I had to send across the bridge 16 months ago. I still go to his grave and talk to him. He was my lifetime favorite.

I'm sorry to hear that; losing a pet is among the hardest of times. 18 years is a good long time though; you must have taken really good care of her.

So sorry for your loss :sadangel: We lost our Siamese a month ago at 16 years, she had digestive issues since about 5 years old and finally was to the point that she was not enjoying life anymore

So sorry to hear of this. Saying goodby to our little pets never gets easier.
We need these little bearers of tenderness in our lives. I'm glad she had such a
loving family. She was never without love with you there for her.

Our very first kittah was a calico. I found her in a trailer we used to store equipment at the landscaper's where I worked at the time. I named her Trouble because I knew the wife and I were both in trouble because she won both our hearts immediately. We only got 15 years... we are both terribly sorry for your loss.

Thanks, everyone.

It's been a rough day. Very sad. I keep second guessing myself with things like...what if we had just given her a few more days? Did we do everything we possibly could? Was there something else we could have tried? Was this really the right thing?

And just thinking about how trusting she was as we put her in the carrier...and me knowing what was coming. Same with sitting on her blanket at the vet...total trust. I have this nagging feeling of guilt like I betrayed that trust.

I keep expecting to see her in her usually spots, forgetting she's gone. Her favorite blanket is still out and I can't quite bring myself to put it away, yet. Is that strange...???

Having her with us for almost 20 years it's a weird feeling that she's not right here. It's just been a rough day.

No, it's not strange. Those little items of theirs that we hold onto gives us comfort as we cope with letting them go. They sooth us while we grieve and give us the opportunity to not have to let go all at once. She was tired NAV, and she needed and wanted to rest. She needed you to help her, and you did. There is no way a creature can bring so much love into your life for so long and it not hurt when it's their time to go. When its your time to cross into the next eternity, she and all her love will be there waiting for you. Prayers are with you.

I have no doubt that you did the right thing. We had the same thoughts with ours, she was never a fan of going to the vet but was oddly calm on the trip that day, I think she was ready too. Afterwards she literally was laying in such a way that she looked relaxed and at piece with the world in a way that she had not been able to be in many years - that was the key to tell me we did the right thing. :sadangel:

Is that strange...???

Absolutely not.

Some probably think it strange I still “talk” with Oscar at this grave and place a fresh rose on it when my roses are blooming. These animals are as much a member of the family as any human, and I’ve yet to have a dysfunctional pet...humans on the other hand, plenty of them.

Need-a-Vette, we have a calico we found as a stray that ran out to us several years ago while on a bike ride. She is a puff ball too and love her to death. This really hit home for me and I truly feel your pain. Our long time fur babies are so loving, it hurts to let them go and it hurts to see them suffer. It sounds like she knew it was time to go to across the bridge to await you (along with the doggies).

I hope your other kitties are doing okay, as do I hope you and your family are.

Felt the same when I lost Rexx, who was 14, almost 7 years ago. Still miss that cat, as he was very cool.

Now, would you like 3 more cats to replace the one you just lost? I can put them in the mail tomorrow... :leaving:
