View Full Version : Set a new track record @ VIR this weekend...

Got very lucky with the weather... it didn't rain at all on Saturday, poured that night, then stopped misting by 8:30 on Sunday and the track began to dry. The forecast all week was showing a potential washout.

Ended up setting a new VIR track record for my class (TimeTrials TTA) with a 2:04.6 on Saturday. Justin Mathews (MSP608) set the previous record February with a 2:04.8. Prior to that the record was held by a gentleman from Georgia in a TTA Z06 with a 2:05.3. At these speeds every little bit counts. My previous personal best was a 2:05.59 which I set in February so I ended up taking a second off my time. I ended up winning my class again on Sunday with a 2:05.1 on a drying track.

Only downer of the weekend was when my student and I (him driving) ran over a dog on track :( I've seen deer get hit, but never a dog on track. Luckily it wasn't someone's at the track, but was a "wild" Danville dog. We were going over 100 in the uphill esses so nothing we could do to avoid it.

Here's a few pics from Finishline Production showing the NASCAR-style spoiler and the 255 tires doing work.

255s doing work son....

Here's my 2:04.6 record lap, but held up by Greg Zimpel's C6 Z06 as viewed from Barry Battle driving a GTS3 M3 to it's fastest lap ever 2:03.7 (it's Kyle Bacon's car)

Unfortunately it did.... cracked his front bumper and bent up the lower radiator supoprt which bend the radiator with it. Not sure how the radiator wasn't leaking. It also broke some coolant hose tabs.

We were in a custom '79 mustang with a SVO turbo 4-cyliner. My student lived about 15 min from the track so he limped it home, but wasn't able to get it fixed to run on Sunday. He came back and hung out for the afternoon though.

Nice job! I wasn't able to get down there last week. Was anybody in the bucket at the bottom of the esses? Did they have any flags out for the dog?

BTW, tell Chris he needs to work harder on the trophy girls:dance::D

I don't remember any flags out, but if there were which one would they fly for potential dog on the track?!?! The dogs were off to the side and ran out from the right side.... it all happened too fast.

A buddy who was flagging said the dogs had been around all morning and it looked like a mother with a puppy or two. If that was the case I don't understand why they didn't do a better job of rounding them up.... it's not like they just came out of nowhere for the first time.

My student did the right thing hitting it.... had he swerved we'd have probably been in the left tire wall at a high rate of speed and the cars behind us would have hit the dog.

At Summit Point, we see a debris flag for deer on/near the track. Makes you hypersensitive about your surroundings.

No it was Mark Nunnally who also holds the RA TTA record. I haven't seen Glen at the track in a few years now.

Yeah I figured debris flag would be the best fit. I'll have to ask about it at my next track event. Maybe animal on track deserves it's own unique flag because it's a rather unique situation.

During an event on the Jefferson Circuit (NVCC Spooktacular) a deer jumped over the hood of a C5 doing close to 90. Dude about shit his pants. Got a video of it somewhere...Can't find it right now. But always cautious running Summit for deer.

Glen's had that car for a few years now... I haven't seen him at the track in like 3 years. Someone told me he had some issue with his eyes or something like that and was taking a break? Unless he's just been racing SCCA and not doing any other events so then naturally I wouldn't see him since I don't run with SCCA.

I know he did the scca nationals in 09. Not sure about last season though. I have not seen him in a while. I see his Fb updates and know he's still running the car. It is all scca events.
