Deputy injured in cow attack has died

SMITH COUNTY (KLTV) - A Smith County Sheriff's Deputy has died, less than a week after he was attacked by an injured animal.

Deputy Robert Britton was directing traffic on FM 344, while authorities were clearing an injured cow from the road; then the animal attacked.

A witness says 54-year-old Britton was first knocked to the ground when he hit his head on the pavement. As Britton lay there injured the animal attacked again.

Deputy Robert Britton died from his injuries Monday afternoon.
