Dudley had a difficult life: He suffered an injury to his leg a a calf that left him lame; walking was a painful, difficult experience for him. In early 2015, he received a prosthesis from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Care. After the successful operation Dudley came to live at the Gentle Care Barn in Knox County.

Here is a video documenting his operation and his happiness at being able to walk (and run!) again:

In June of this year it was announced that Dudley needed a new prosthesis since he had outgrown his previous one; however, while in good spirits, he hadn't been eating or moving his bowels. The cause was an intestinal rupture that couldn't be repaired. He passed away on June 21, 2017.

Dudley was Gentle Care's most beloved animal. At least he had 2-1/2 years of happy, healthy life that he relished living. May he RIP. :sadangel::sadangel::sadangel:

if you name your livestock, it makes it harder to eat them later.

When I was growing up, the farm up the road boarded race horses. Mr Dickson purchased two steers. Bob and Donna ( his kids ) had names picked out for them. Dad informed them since he purchased them, he would name them.

One was named Lunch and the other Dinner.

Yes, they ended up in the freezer

When I was a little kid, my Mother spoke of her family in the middle of Cleveland Ohio, and she born in 1903, they kept a whole bunch of farm animals in the back yard/property...which was apparently about 1/4 acre.....well when it came time to butcher the cow, she got sick over it, and mentioned many a time that she really did not like to cook red meat, she served SO much fish/seafood that I just grew up disliking it, and so never order up fish if I have any choice......
