Regardless of what view any entertainer has, the best way for them to lose half, if not all of their audience, is to get snottily vocal about their political/religious opinion. And the snottier they are, the more they are going to lose.
That's bad for business. Best to keep their opinions to themselves.
And if they do feel so strongly about their point of view, a respectful statement of thier position, is going to cost a lot less than a hateful one.

While I disagree with that they said years ago, I think everyone went overboard about it. Was it in bad taste? Sure. But the fact that radio stations still won't play them, people were burning their CD's, and the death threats - that's a bit much.

Look at friggin' Kanye. He's stuck his damn foot in his mouth more time than I can count, and nothing like that ever happened to him.

I think a lot of the heartburn was over where and when they made the comments, not what they said anything or had an opinion.

Not overboard in the least I think. I, and others like me, voted against them with our wallets, and they lost. I agree with you on the death threats though, THAT was too much. Not the rest of it however.

The reason I won't listen to or support them in any way, this is their opinion, in their own words:

band member Emily Robison noted that some music artists tried to exploit the war in Iraq.
"A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video," Robison said.

"It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism." Maines added, "The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country ... I don't see why people care about patriotism."

Who said country music was lame? Dixie Chicks frontwoman Natalie Maines’ loose tongue seems to have gotten her and her bandmates into trouble yet again. Hot on the heels of the controversy over Maines’ opinionated comments about President Bush, the feud between Maines and country singer Toby Keith has heated up considerably. The battle of the country stars started back in August 2002 when Maines criticized Keith’s single "Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American)." She said of the single, "I hate it. It’s ignorant." In turn, Keith was quoted in December 2002 as saying, "I’ll bury her. She has never written anything that’s been a hit."

Well, the war is on! On May 21, Maines performed on television at the AMC Awards wearing a F.U.T.K. tee shirt – which viewers declared a definite telling off of T.K. (Toby Keith). According to a Dixie Chicks rep, "It’s my understanding that according to chatter on their web site, Natalie’s T-shirt stands for FREEDOM, UNDERSTANDING, TRUTH, AND KNOWLEDGE." Yeah, right! If you are going to have the guts to make a bold statement, you should be able to back it up! The following night, Keith appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, while his faithful supporters showed up sporting tee shirts that read F.U.D.C. Maybe their tees mean Freedom, Understanding, Democracy and Country. Or maybe it is just what the message seems!

Whatever happened to freedom of speech? There are plenty of people out there that would like to sport tees that read F.U.C.M. (Country Music) So what?! We aren’t all programmed to like the same thing! So why the battle between Maines and Keith? It seems that The Dixie Chicks’ latest album Home remains steadfast at number 4 in the country music charts and Keith’s Unleashed remains at number 1! The conflict between the two just may be the reason they have remained at the top.

Agreed, but as TxAg pointed out, Kanye has a different audience. I don't listen to him because I find him basically a no-talent, not because he says stupid things. And when Maines went after Toby Keith? Oh boy...huge mistake.

Entertainers seem to think that by virtue of the fact that they have a fan base that will listen to them, they are suddenly blessed with high levels of intelligence, when in reality, they'd be a lot better off doing what they do best and not speaking so much. That doesn't mean they haven't got the right to say how they feel, but you'd better have the smarts to figure out if you're pointing a gun at your own head when you say it.

Just because we have freedom of speech in this country, doesn't mean it's always a good idea to exercise that freedom.

I liked the Chicks for years - back before Natalie joined ( I used to watch her Dad and Uncle's Maines Bros band out in West Texas back in the 70's and 80's). The Chicks were a staple of the North Texas music scene for years as a "cowgirl" act doing old western tunes and bluegrass. It was the two sisters and another girl singing lead. One day the lead singer's boyfriend won the Texas Lottery and she retired from the band.

Natalie joined, brought her Dad, Lloyd, on as producer and they hit it big.

I have several of their albums and have seen them in concert more than once. Because they have talent, write cool songs and put on a good show.

Do I agree with their political views? Of course not. But if you only appreciate the talents of those you politically agree with, your world gets really small, really quick. I'm not doing a card check on folks to decide if they are worthy of my attention.

For the record, I also like Cat Stevens. I don't think he's Presbyterian.

Oh, but her manager DID try to get her to back down. Maines wouldn't hear any part of it. There was a documentary film crew following the band around filming just about everything backstage. They happened to catch the girls being told by their manager about the backlash that was building soon after she made the statements onstage in England about being ashamed of Bush.

Here's the link of what he said, and what Maines said. She's an arrogant, stubborn mule and had no bones about making sure everyone knew that.
