View Full Version : Anyone get sore riding their lawn mower?

I have a Cub Cadet 42" cut 22 HP twin cylinder rider. The first time I rode it about killed me: Every little bump about threw me out of the seat. Sure enough, the tire pressure was way too high, but bringing it within specs isn't a lot better.
I see that there isn't an air suspension seat available, at least not for less that several hundred dollars. Forums say to get a Roho brand air cell or gel cell seat. Any comments on these seats or others?

Nope, still comfy even after 17 years. :seasix:
Of course I'm only cutting a half acre, not 20 acres. :faint:

Great point, how many acres you cutting there man??? anything over two gotta be a ball buster....my Father's 2 acres took about 4 hours to do with a ~48 inch deck, anything over that is a tad much and we had 1/2 way decent padded seats.....and this was decades ago.....I was a kid from late teens through maybe 23 or so....Dad finally gave it up after crashing the mower through the fence in reverse.....the land was mostly flat...

No I don't ride my lawnmower, I don't think I'd enjoy it very much, neither would Jose or my wife for that matter.

Most lawns are pretty flat and smooth......Your lawn must be pretty rough to be bouncing like that.....what are you doing....off roading?

How fast are you going? :drivingskid:
Mine doesn't bother me and I have mole ridges everywhere.

I recently bought a riding mower. I've only used it once, and did experience some soreness.
It has 3 seat spring settings for ride firmness. It was set in the middle, so I changed it to softer, & will see if that helps when I mow this week.
I have about 1-1/4 acres to mow, and the ground is quite bumpy, which doesn't help.

After borrowing my neighbor's zero turn last weekend, I have a new respect for anyone who can mow fast with one.

To answer your questions, I don't think my lawn is any bumpier than most lawns. I mow about 2 acres, the rest I handle with a bush hog pulled by a tractor with an air suspension seat, which isn't painful at all.
Does anyone have a recommendation on seat pads?

I don't view post #5 as a recommendation, rather just a link to some pads that are sold "somewhere in the US" and that are 1.5" thick.

OK then. Never mind, as apparently, nothing there will help.

At times it's taken careful planning and informed decision making, but I have succeeded in never owning a lawnmower in my adult life.:seasix:

My cub cadet zero turn has a comfortable seat. Way more cushion than my tractor style mower, also a Cub.
Lower your rear tire pressure two or three more lbs and get a foam cushion. Sounds like your yard is pretty ruff. After years of mowing my yard, I've learned what areas to slow down on.

Have you asked the dealer where you bought it?

After you use it 3 to 4 times you get the hang of it real good. In the beginning the steering is quirky till you get a feeling for it. But once you get it you become a monster on it..

my "almost zero turn" mower is fast;

but to get the benefit of the speed - the lawn needs be flat.
Every two years I roll my entire lawn... with one of those rented asphalt roller contraptions

this roller weighs 5500 lbs, and I mash the schit out of my lawn. It's the only way to be able to cut using the speed my mower is capable of.

We need to do this at our PA house. :yesnod:
man I almost started a riding mower thread this morning too. We looked at the John deer D155 at Home Depot yesterday. With my recent back issues the rider I have just kills me every time I sit on it, plus its 20 years old and needs a new drive belt so seems like a good time to spend $2k. I dont need a zero turn because I dont have a sculpted lawn and I end up driving long, straight lines. I mow 2-3 acres but only mow every other week if not every 3. I have been meaning to get a roller too to smooth that shyt out because I have tire ruts in some of it that make for a spine jarring experience. might get the deere by next weekend, the seat was really comfy.

you can get close to zero turn though, and with a steering wheel (you can one-hand it :) )
My Toro 120 (pic link in earlier post) leaves a 10" circle uncut with the steering wheel turned full a direction. I seem to remember that the next larger model had power steering.
Get one of these.

you know, I thought it was funny that there was a cup holder on the z-turn when it clearly takes both hands 100% of the time to keep moving. I like my tractor style mower because I can sip my beverage of choice without stopping the machine..
