View Full Version : I'm in Craigslist hell!

I have been shopping for a utility trailer for a while now. I am looking for something with a solid frame and built heavy duty. I want it to be able to haul 1 ton of coal or hold 2 ton if I have it delivered. I recently tore the coal bin out of the garage and cut in a new garage door so now I have 2 stalls and a nice 25 x 25 workspace.
I have learned a few things that remind me how frustrating shopping on Craigslist is.
1 Custom built trailer means this was my first attempt at welding.
2 Heavy duty doesn't mean heavier gauge metal or stronger axles, it means welds are two inches thick.
3 trailer must appreciate in value as a 30 year old car hauler with mobile home axles is worth within $500 of a brand new 10k gvwr car hauler.
4 Road worthy means it will make it across the yard because the dry rotted flat tires have not yet exploded.

I can hear the Craigslister now...
"I've got $1M in that broke ass POS trailer there. You can talk me down 29 cents."
:rofl::lol:
Check out U-Haul for used trailers.

My favorite is "They don't make them like this anymore." Yes, they do and they are less money than this pice of crap.
"I use it to haul my skidsteer and it does fine. The axles are rated for 1500 lbs."

Craigslist was an education in scammers and low ballers when I decided to throw a few things up for sale. The most fun was the one year old tv I had listed and ended up just keeping. I'd already sold a coupla things and gotten the hang of the cheap asses. So, ole dude decided to low ball me by one third. I countered by upping $100. Why did he disappear? :D

When we downsized our house I had to get rid of a lot of stuff. I either gave it to kids and grandkids or local thrift shops. I probably lost a lot of money, but I know I saved a lot of headaches.:yesnod:

I like when you tell them that you'll give them what it's really worth (usually half or less of what they are asking), and you get the "but I paid blah, blah, blah for it".
Yeah, if I wanted to pay blah, blah, blah for it, I'd buy a new one, I wouldn't be searching Craigslist.

The 14.5 tires are mobile home tires. You may have a difficult time getting it inspected with that tire and rim combination on it. :yesnod:

Because they don't make them like they used too:leaving:
I thought about just getting a car hauler, some new garage doors and openers, and a new 1911. Oh, and maybe go on a cruise somewhere nice. Instead I am getting a used trailer project, new garage doors without openers and 5k in braces for my daughter so she can have a perfect smile according to her dentist who drives a new BMW every year.

I've got those on my 16 footer. Don't have to have trailers inspected here, and you can get a permanent tag on them. However, getting those tires and finding someone to mount them is getting to be a bitch.

In PA, trailers with brakes must be inspected every year.
