Ferrari building SUV despite promise never to do so?
By Clifford Atiyeh Published July 07, 2017 Fox News

Enzo Ferrari would never have placed his name on a high-riding 4x4, but today there are too many people who want a prancing horse on their next SUV.

According to Britain’s Car Magazine, Ferrari has approved development of its first-ever SUV, a vehicle the company had promised to never build. While the news isn’t official, a Ferrari SUV won’t be without precedent. Since 2011, Ferrari has sold the FF (renamed GTC4Lusso), an all-wheel drive supercar with a hatchback and fold-down seats. Car Magazine says the new SUV would replace that model in 2020.

It’s also believable since Ferrari became a publicly-traded company in 2015 and separated from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Despite Ferrari’s independence, FCA shareholders and Piero Ferrari (Enzo’s last surviving son) control 90 percent of the Italian automaker. FCA and Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne wants more popular SUVs and crossovers to boost sales, and as Ferrari is still a cash cow for FCA, a Ferrari SUV would strike oil.

Plus, the competition among ultra-luxury SUVs is heating up. Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini will release 12-cylinder SUVs by the decade’s end, while the 187-mph Bentley Bentayga is the world’s fastest SUV. Mercedes-Benz sells a 621-horsepower army truck, the AMG G65, for more than $220,000. At the sub-$100,000 level, the Maserati Levante, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and Jaguar F-Pace are all sleek, fast SUVs from traditional sports car companies. Porsche started the craze with its 2003 Cayenne, and now the automaker sells two SUVs that are more popular than its legendary 911.

Enzo must rapidly be approaching the 11,000 rpm limit of one of the Formula 1 cars. Once he gets to the red line will he burst forth from his grave screaming "No"?

How many of these will ever venture further "off road" than the lawn at Pebble Beach or Newport? Perhaps the Polo grounds?

Nice looking vehicle, however.

And on the tangent tip, what of the lowly Fiat (Fix It Again Tony) 500X? Is it the millennial incarnation of the Suzuki Grand Vitara? :confused5:

No, it's the reincarnation of the original fiat 500 (500cc) that was a double pump clutch. I drove a few in Italy when I lived there.

We've had a 500X for a year now. The wife has claimed it as her own, and she loves it. For the most part, it has been problem free.

No, that would be the regular Fiat 500 2 door. The one OneDef pictured is the 4 door mini SUV that's available in FWD & AWD. Jeep builds the Renegade on the same platform. :yesnod:

Good to know. The new Spyder 124 convertible (Fiata) is getting crucified by many enthusiasts.

Apparently, it's MX-5 mechanicals don't include the engine, suspension and power train; a 160-hp 1.4-liter turbo four with either a six-speed manual or auto.

The racy Abarth gets a sport-tuned exhaust, a limited-slip differential, and a boost to 164 hp.

The Fiat 124 is an order of magnitude better looking than it's MX-5 sibling. The Fiat does have different suspension tuning, if not completely different parts. Not sure about the mechanicals though. Haven't really looked closely at the 124 as I'm assuming I just won't fit.
