Flew into Dallas this afternoon, DAL. As we were on approach I looked out the window and there was Gas Monkey Garage, and yes, big black donuts in the parking lot...wish I'd got a picture but...no.

I wouldn't let that crew tune up my weedeater. A bunch of asshats, perhaps surpassed (or equaled by) the West Coast Customs or Unique Whi... UHHH... Rides bunch. Scripted "reality" and slasher work.

Don't feel bad; entertainment comes in many forms. I just couldn't spend my hard earned cash in any of these shops.:seasix:

When the late Bruce Rossmeyer built his H-D mecca just north of Daytona years ago, the news folks all showed up for the grand opening. He had promised this dealership and associated retail would be the greatest ever, and that he was taking bike week away from Daytona. The reporter asked about the extravagance, saying the bike business must be good. Bruce said, "I don't know about that, but the t-shirt business is doing great!"

I often wonder about some of these shows, is the work as bad as is seems when the cameras aren't around, or is the drama all for the camera?

American Hot Rod was all drama, but Boyd built a lot of great cars. I've heard the stories of issues with some of the cars, wiring etc, but I think in general Boyd built better cars than the show depicted, if not would people have continued to go back to him for custom cars.

The Tuetuls can back that up, their money was completely from t-shirts and souvenirs

I'm tired of the same crap all the time and it's all manufactured. "We're struggling to beat the finish date..." Soooo, what happens if you don't? Does a pandemic start? And before every commercial break there's some sort of unsolvable problem (complete with dramatic cymbal rattling) that they always magically solve after the break with happy music playing in the background. The metal music, the ink, the earrings, every other word is bleeped out, everyone folding their arms in front of them during the credits for some fake bar-fight attitude. Please.

You build cool shit, but is this the best you can do? For the most part, I like the shows. I just wish they wouldn't gear their programming to the country's lowest common denominator.

:iagree:

However, along with the ink and the earrings it is also important to mention those beards, be it one of those ZZ Top wannabes, the Charles Manson grizzly look, or the classic billygoat style.

Unfortunately, that is most of TV.

I read somewhere that Bitchin' Rides is the one "builder" show where the work is the priority, not the timeline. Dave Kindig's guys build uncompromising, show winning hot rods, and the TV material gets assembled after completion...whenever that is. There's a lot of the standard formula there, but attention to detail isn't brushed aside for the arm folding shot.

But....Chip Foose builds show winners too. His "overhauled" Dodge Challenger now resides here in Orlando and the build quality apparently wasn't what you would expect. I think several of those dream cars are probably on the market shortly after the camera crew pulls out of the driveway.

The only show that impresses me is Graveyard Cars and I'm not that into old MOPARs.

GYC was absolutely unwatchable the first few seasons. Then they got rid of a few of the idiots and got a few people who knew what they were doing and reduced the stupid banter between Mark Worman and the rest of the crew. The show has improved a lot and I love the Mopars they do. Very drool-worthy.

I like that show a lot. If I were going to have a custom car built, Kindig's shop is where I'd send it. There's still a little stupid back and forth between him and Kevin Schiele, but overall I like watching what they do and I can tell their work is top notch. FantomWorks isn't bad either. Chasing Classic Cars is cool but it's more of a car search and auction show as opposed to a build show. "Oh! Look at this 8 million dollar Bugatti we found with chickens living in it in North Carolina!"

Ohhhh Kayyyy....

I will say this, Jesse James is the real deal. Probably one of the best metalworkers of our time.

But do you think the lowest common denominator is that HIGH? :)

It's not TV without the fabricated drama. Can't just show some regular guys building some cool stuff. Need the drama. Need the attitude, and the f-ups, and the deadlines. Who would ever watch a drama-free show about people taking something old, doing a refurb on it, showing you the updated technology that they're putting into it, and showing off some craftsmanship. No way would a show like that last...

Great point, TOH has stood the test of time and is one of the ones that is always on my DVR. I suspect that their audience is aging though, probably a relatively different age group than watches GMG, etc.

Definitely a different viewer base. But a totally different show.

The ones like Gas Monkey are drama/contrived-reality shows centered around a vehicle. The vehicle project is really secondary to the story.

TOH is the opposite. The project IS the story and any drama is secondary. "OMG, this beam is rotten, this will kill the budget"
