If you grew up more than 25 years ago, summer didn’t involve sitting in front of a computer or looking down at a smartphone every five seconds. It didn’t involve intense, organized sports.

Summer meant marathon games of tag and kickball. It meant building forts and treehouses. It meant riding bikes, skateboards and scooters.

It meant finding relief from the heat by jumping into a lake or a swimming pool, or running through a sprinkler. If we got tired of the same old games and activities, we invented new ones.

This is what summer was all about from sun up to sun down, with breaks for lunch and dinner. Every day, our parents would shout those four magic words that I wish more parents today would repeat all summer.

Go outside and play!......:seasix:

I'm very thankful that my kids favorite thing to do is play outside. They'll stay outside as long as we'll let them.

We were told "go outside and play" & "be back when the street light comes on." :seasix:

Sort of the same thing here. We could stay out until the lamplighters came out.

25 years ago I had just gotten out of the Marines and was in school. Worked 8-1 M-F and had school every night 6-10:00 M-F. I wasnt usually home until after the streetlights had already come on.... 35 years ago though....different story, Bikes, kick the can, red rover, and MTV, but mom always telling us to 'get out of the house, go out side and play, find something to do that doesnt involve sitting or sleeping.'

Back around 1970 myself and other 14 year old friend were heavily into model cars. Summer came and we were allowed to sleep in my folk's RV trailer parked in the back yard. The sun rose early in Edmonton Alberta during the summer and we were up at about 3:30 A.M. building models, hacking them apart and rebuilding them.:Jeff '79:

Back when I was a kid back in the 60's we were outside all day in the summer after being in school for 9 months. Have many good memories of that time with my friends.:cert:

Mom's favorite thing was, "If you can't find anything to do, I'LL find something for you to do."

Worked every time...

25 years ago I was 51. A little old for those games... But 60 years ago it was actually much the same. I can remember being away from home just wandering the neighborhood for 10 -12 hours a day finding something to do, many things that would be frowned upon today. Good old days, I guess...

25 years ago I had a condo in a "Multicultural" neighborhood ( Central Islip, NY), a wife and two kids, a 1982 Gran Prix and a 1989 Nissan Sentra. I was one year into my second attempt at my own business working 80 hours a week just to pay the mortgage and health insurance. We ate mac and cheese 4 days a week.
